Proactive disease prevention
Living in a densely populated area of Thuan Hoa ward, with a population density of over 13,000 people/km2 and a high concentration of tourists, Mr. Ho Trung Hau's family has consistently maintained the habit of vaccinating their four dogs against rabies around mid-May for many years. For Mr. Hau's family, complying with vaccination regulations is not simply about caring for pets, but also a responsibility to the community. Mr. Hau shared: "My family has raised dogs for many years, so whenever it's time for vaccinations, we take them to get vaccinated. We live in a densely populated residential area, especially during the summer when children play outdoors a lot, so vaccinating against rabies is not only about protecting our pets but also a responsibility to the community."
To ensure high vaccination coverage in the densely populated central area, the local veterinary force of Thuan Hoa ward coordinated with neighborhood groups to review more than 2,200 dogs and cats eligible for vaccination in the area. Several supplementary vaccination campaigns were also organized to minimize the number of unvaccinated pets.
Mr. Nguyen Van Binh, a veterinary officer at Thuan Hoa ward, said: “During this vaccination campaign, we coordinated with neighborhood committees to review each household raising dogs and cats, and also organized supplementary vaccinations for those who were absent or had not brought their pets for vaccination on time. To date, the locality has administered nearly 2,000 doses of rabies vaccine, achieving more than 92% of the planned target.”
Similarly, in Phu Xuan ward, thanks to effective rabies vaccination efforts, the ward has achieved a rabies vaccination rate of 93% for dogs and cats, equivalent to vaccinating 3,690 out of 3,920 animals. Many other localities in the city are also intensifying their efforts to encourage people to proactively vaccinate their dogs and cats against rabies, thereby increasing vaccination rates and limiting disease outbreaks.
Increase coverage
From April to June, Hue enters its peak tourist season, with a large concentration of locals and tourists in the city center. Therefore, ensuring disease safety in the community is a matter that needs even more attention. The city's veterinary department has continuously launched large-scale rabies vaccination campaigns and organized many mobile vaccination points to make it convenient for people to bring their pets for vaccination.
The city currently has a total of over 59,290 dogs and cats. To date, local authorities have administered 55,496 doses of rabies vaccine, achieving 94% of the target. Notably, many households have raised their awareness and proactively brought their dogs and cats for regular vaccinations instead of waiting for persuasion as before.
Since the beginning of the year, the country has recorded 30 deaths due to rabies in 17 provinces and cities. This remains a dangerous disease with a nearly 100% mortality rate once the disease develops. Therefore, widespread rabies vaccination for dogs and cats will contribute to reducing the risk of rabies outbreaks in the community, raising public awareness of pet management, and ensuring a safe and civilized tourism environment.
"From now until the end of the year, the veterinary sector will continue to organize catch-up and supplementary vaccinations for newly arising cases, striving to achieve a 100% rabies vaccination rate for dogs and cats," informed Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Hue City.
