Huyen's mother was born into a revolutionary family in Thach Dong commune (now Tran Phu ward, Ha Tinh province ), the daughter of a pre-revolutionary cadre who died in 1938. After growing up and starting her own family, Huyen's mother gave birth to eight children, two of whom, Nguyen Van Duong and Nguyen Van Cat, sacrificed their lives for the country while fighting alongside their comrades to protect the border and fulfill international duties in Cambodia. In the documentary, Huyen's mother couldn't hold back her tears when mentioning her deceased sons: "Of course I miss them, my heart aches. How could I forget them after giving birth? Even now, I still imagine them; I can't forget them." Overcoming hardships, the belief that "my sons are gone, but the country remains" gave her the motivation to contribute and become the pillar of her family.
Huyen's mother currently lives in a small house in Tran Phu ward with her youngest son and his wife. Despite her advanced age, she still goes to the local market every day to sell rice rolls. Huyen's mother's presence is a vivid symbol of the image of Vietnamese women in both wartime and peacetime: steadfast in their loyalty to the Fatherland and full of resilience in everyday life.
