According to Bloomberg , Meta has successfully attracted Alan Dye, Apple's top interface designer, in a move that is considered a major turning point. This reflects the social networking giant's ambition to step up the development of AI-integrated consumer devices.
Dye, who has been Apple's chief interface designer since 2015, will leave the company after informing executives this week. Apple will appoint veteran designer Stephen Lemay to replace him.
“Steve Lemay has played a key role in designing every major Apple interface since 1999. He has always set a very high standard for excellence and embodies the company's creative, collaborative culture,” said CEO Tim Cook.
Dye's departure from Apple follows a wave of personnel changes within the design team since the legendary Jony Ive left the company in 2019. Dye played a key role in shaping the look of new operating systems, apps and devices, including Vision Pro, Apple Watch and iPhone X. His team also worked on new smart home devices.
On the Meta side, the company is creating a new design studio and putting Dye in charge of all hardware, software, and AI integration design for future products. He will report directly to Andrew Bosworth, chief technology officer and head of Reality Labs, the division that develops smart glasses, virtual reality headsets, and wearables.
Dye's focus at Meta is to enhance the consumer device experience through AI technology. He will officially take over as the group's Chief Design Officer on December 31.

Along with Dye, Meta also brought on Billy Sorrentino, VP and former senior leader of Apple's design team since 2016. Meta's current design leaders Joshua To, Jason Rubin, and Peter Bristol will report directly to Dye.
Dye's departure comes as the iPhone maker has seen a series of significant personnel changes. Jeff Williams, one of its veteran leaders, announced his retirement in November. AI chief John Giannandrea also announced his departure in December after a long effort to help Apple catch up in the artificial intelligence race.
Former hardware chief Dan Riccio left the company late last year. Bloomberg said the changes could continue as other senior executives, including Cook, approach retirement age. Some employees like Johnny Srouji and Lisa Jackson are also considering their futures at Apple.
