The British Army has just established a new military unit to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into combat operations, aiming to improve response speed in an increasingly complex battlefield environment.
The Rapid AI Deployment Task Force (RAID), personally announced by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, will be placed under the direct command of the Chief of Defence Staff. The unit is responsible for providing combat forces with the tools to accelerate planning, process live data, and deploy automated systems to enhance force protection.

London said RAID's operations will focus on intelligence analysis, enhancing electronic warfare awareness, predictive planning, and developing AI-powered drone swarm coordination capabilities.
“Britain faces a clear choice: either proactively shape the AI revolution, or let it shape us,” Starmer stressed. “This choice will have far-reaching implications for our economy , public services, and national security.”
"We are proactively taking control of our future… safely, quickly and responsibly," the British Prime Minister added.
According to the UK Ministry of Defence, RAID brings together military personnel and technical experts in a unified structure.
This unit will also have the authority to bypass standard procurement processes to keep pace with the rapid development of technology, with a focus on contracts for domestic technology companies and startups.

One of RAID's first partners is the UK-based software company Rowden, which recently received a £25 million (approximately $33.5 million) investment to expand its national security technologies and create around 500 jobs.
"Technology is rapidly changing the nature of warfare, and we are keeping our forces at the forefront," affirmed British Defence Secretary John Healey.
The Chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Air Force General Richard Knighton, also commented on the effort, pledging that it would be a program that delivers tangible results, not just a formality.
"I am determined to ensure that TF RAID is not just a symbolic move, designed to create the illusion that something is happening," General Richard Knighton emphasized.
