On June 23, 2014, at the 38th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in Doha (Qatar), the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex in Ninh Binh province was officially inscribed as a World Cultural and Natural Heritage site. This is the first mixed heritage site in Vietnam and Southeast Asia to be recognized by UNESCO based on both its outstanding cultural and natural values.
The Trang An scenic complex covers an area of over 12,000 hectares, including the Hoa Lu Ancient Capital historical and cultural relic site, the Trang An - Tam Coc - Bich Dong scenic area, and the Hoa Lu special-use forest.
The heritage site encompasses a system of limestone mountains, caves, rivers, traces of prehistoric settlements, and historical values associated with the first capital of Vietnam's centralized feudal state.
UNESCO recognizes Trang An as outstanding for its aesthetic landscape, geological and geomorphological features, and archaeological evidence reflecting human adaptation to environmental changes over thousands of years.
