- As a border commune still facing many difficulties, in recent years, the people of Quoc Khanh commune have proactively and effectively exploited the potential and strengths of the hills and forests to develop the economy and increase income. Through promoting reforestation, many households have gradually risen to become wealthy, their lives have improved, thereby contributing to the socio-economic development of the locality.
Accompanied by officials from the Economic Department of Quoc Khanh commune, we had the opportunity to visit the planted forests of local residents. As we walked, the commune officials pointed to the spacious multi-story houses and shared that most of these houses were built with stable income from forest-based economic activities. These visible changes not only demonstrate the effectiveness of the right direction but also clearly reflect the transformation in the lives of the people here.

The family of Mr. Au Van Huan in Na Khau village is one of the exemplary households that have effectively developed the hill and forest economy. Mr. Huan said: "Since 2015, through the dissemination of information and guidance from the commune government, my family has boldly renovated our hillside land to plant 7 hectares of eucalyptus trees. Thanks to proper care and techniques, our forest area has developed well. To date, the forest has yielded two harvests, each bringing my family an income of 600 million VND. Currently, my family is continuing to care for the eucalyptus sprouts after harvesting."
According to Mr. Mo Quang Phong, Party Secretary and Head of Na Khau village, the village currently has 45 households, 100% of which focus on developing the hill and forest economy with an area of 500 hectares. Thanks to effectively utilizing the strengths of the hill and forest, the lives of the villagers have improved significantly, with many households earning between 100 and 300 million VND per year from forestry. Currently, only 2 households remain poor in the village.
Over the past five years, the reforestation movement has developed strongly in the commune. Currently, all 29 villages in the commune have forests, with approximately 60% of households involved in reforestation. People focus on planting pine, acacia, eucalyptus, cinnamon, and star anise trees. Some households plant as little as 1 hectare, while others plant as much as 15-20 hectares.
Besides the proactive efforts of the people, the People's Committee of the commune and relevant units have implemented many solutions to support people in developing forestry. Mr. Nong Viet Vinh, Head of the Economic Department of the commune, said: Quoc Khanh commune has a natural land area of over 16,800 hectares, of which forest land accounts for over 75%. This is a strength for the commune to develop its hill and forest economy. Accordingly, along with promoting propaganda and guiding people to develop forest planting, the commune regularly coordinates with relevant units to organize training courses integrating guidance on planting and caring for forest trees for the people.
In addition, the commune has also created favorable conditions for people to access preferential loan sources to develop hill and forest areas. To date, the total outstanding loan balance of people in the commune at the Trang Dinh Branch of the Social Policy Bank is 68.2 billion VND, with 1,119 borrowing households.
With the guidance of the commune and the proactive efforts of the people, the commune's forest area currently covers nearly 3,000 hectares. On average, the commune's planted forest timber production reaches over 3,500 m3 per year. From the forest, many households in the commune have achieved stable incomes, averaging 100-300 million VND per year, with many households earning 500 million VND or more per year. Currently, the average per capita income in the commune is 41.25 million VND/person/year; the poverty rate in the commune is projected to be 1.21% by the end of 2025.
