Before officially going on sale, from April to the end of May, the Phu Tho Circus and Multipurpose Performance Hall welcomed a large audience every weekend for free performances. This is considered a major step forward in building a modern performance space, contributing to elevating the art of circus and puppetry and expanding cultural enjoyment for the people of Ho Chi Minh City.
The 2,000-seat stage ushers in a new era for circus arts in Ho Chi Minh City.
With a construction budget of nearly 1.4 trillion VND, the facility is now welcoming its first visitors to tour the infrastructure and observe rehearsals by circus and puppeteers. Notably, the theater boasts a 2,000-seat capacity, a 24-meter-high ceiling, and a 360-degree stage, making it ideal for hosting large-scale artistic performances.
Director Nguyen Quoc Cong – Head of the Circus Troupe, Ho Chi Minh City Arts Center – said that the unit has now taken over more than 80% of the theater's functionality. Many items such as sound, lighting, and air conditioning systems are being transferred so that the team can operate them independently. According to him, performing on a 2,000-seat stage is completely different from performing on smaller stages before, and it also opens up opportunities to organize national and international circus festivals.
Meanwhile, Mr. Tran Duoc, Deputy Head of the Southern Dragon Troupe, believes that the new stage demands innovation in both content and personnel. Not only will future programs focus on traditional water puppetry, but they will also incorporate opera, 3D mapping technology, and many other modern performance art forms.
For performing artists, the new stage presents both opportunities and pressures to improve their skills. Circus performer Phung Minh Cuong shared that, given the rapidly changing demands of the audience, artists are forced to constantly train and hone their skills to meet increasingly high requirements.
Currently, the Phu Tho Circus and Multipurpose Performance Hall is considered one of the ten largest and most modern circuses in the world . It is expected that in July, a new version of the circus show "Mysterious Land" will be performed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Saigon - Gia Dinh City being renamed after President Ho Chi Minh. Following that, in November 2026, it will host the Ho Chi Minh City International Circus Festival.
