In a surprise announcement made ahead of its annual congress in Brussels, Belgium, UEFA confirmed that it had reached an agreement with Real Madrid and the European Club Football Federation (EFC) on the Super League project.
According to The Guardian , this move puts an end to all of Real Madrid's ambitions since the Super League project shook the world in 2021. The Spanish club is the last club remaining after Barca withdrew last week.
The new agreement between the parties emphasizes "respecting the principles of sporting achievement, focusing on the long-term sustainability of clubs and enhancing the fan experience through technology."
Just over three months ago, Real Madrid announced they would seek substantial damages from UEFA for obstructing their Super League project.
The Spanish representatives relied on a ruling by a Madrid court that UEFA and La Liga had abused their dominant position.
However, now that everything is settled, Real Madrid will withdraw the lawsuit, accepting a return to the traditional European football system.
Following the collapse of the Super League, Real Madrid is expected to rejoin the EFC (formerly the European Club Association - ECA), the organization they left in 2021.
EFC President Nasser al-Khelaifi welcomed this turning point, saying: "Everyone has worked honestly and in good faith. Football will be the ultimate winner."
UEFA and the EFC are currently very pleased with the success of the new Champions League format. This format is expected to remain unchanged for the period from 2027 to 2031. Any changes after that time have yet to be decided.
