FIFA has rejected the possibility of inviting Barcelona to the 2025 Club World Cup.

The vacant spot appeared after FC Leon (Mexico) was disqualified for violating the rules on multi-team ownership. However, FIFA is awaiting a ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS) before taking further action.

Only after the final ruling from TAS following a hearing in Switzerland in early May will FIFA decide how to handle the 32nd qualifying spot in this year's tournament. But according to Mundo Deportivo , the possibility of Barca being invited as a replacement is almost non-existent.

At that time, Lionel Messi missed the opportunity to face Barcelona in the United States. Inter Miami was one of 32 teams to qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup thanks to their victory in the Supporters' Shield the previous season.

On March 21, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee removed Leon FC from the tournament due to overlapping ownership relationships with Pachuca. Both clubs share the same owner and management. Despite Leon's appeal to the TAS, FIFA maintained its stance.

Mundo Deportivo reports that FIFA is concerned that Leon and Pachuca are essentially still under the direct control of the same management group. Although both teams have proposed selling one of them to legitimize the regulation, FIFA believes this is merely a formality to circumvent the rules.

The world's most powerful football organization emphasized: "Even if the club sale is completed now, it does not change the fact that both teams are in violation of Article 10 of the Regulations when submitting their application to participate in the competition on February 6, 2025. This only further clarifies that the multi-club ownership structure still exists."

The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 will be the first time in history that 32 teams will participate, with a total prize money of up to $1 billion (approximately £776 million), a record in history.
