Robot for digging underground tunnels for the Nhổn metro

After more than 3 months of construction, the robot has excavated 625 meters of the underground section of the Nhon - Hanoi Station metro line. The tunnel drilling is expected to be completed in November 2025.

Regarding the progress of the Nhon - Hanoi Metro underground station project, Mr. Nguyen Ba Son, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board, told the Traffic Newspaper: Tunnel drilling using TBM machines has been underway since July 30, 2024.

To date, the TBM has drilled 625 meters, reaching the area of ​​the escape shaft, one of the key components of the project.

"We are currently closely monitoring the progress and will complete the tunneling work by November 2025," Mr. Son said.

Robots are speeding up their work to complete the underground excavation for the Nhon - Hanoi Station metro line on schedule.

The underground section of the Nhon - Hanoi Station line was excavated using a pair of TBMs specifically designed for the project, named "Rapid" and "Bold". Manufactured by Herrenkecht (Germany), the machines are over 100 meters long and weigh approximately 850 tons.

According to the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board, the tunnel excavation speed depends on the surrounding geological conditions as well as logistical factors, in order to minimize the impact on above-ground structures.

Regarding the operation of the elevated section of the Nhon - Hanoi Station metro line, Mr. Vu Hong Truong, General Director of Hanoi Metro Company Limited, said: On weekdays (Monday to Friday), the number of passengers on the line reaches around 19,000; on Saturdays and Sundays, it reaches 12,000 - 14,000 passengers.

According to Mr. Truong, this is an encouragement and motivation for the team directly involved in operations to strive to serve the people better.

This also reflects the pressure from reality, demonstrating the superiority of fast, high-volume transportation, so that we can mobilize all resources—financial, human, and spiritual—to accelerate the investment progress of Hanoi's approved urban railway lines according to the plan.

The Nhon - Hanoi Station urban railway project, invested by the Hanoi City Urban Railway Management Board, has a length of 12.5km, including an elevated section (Nhon - Cau Giay) of 8.5km and an underground section (Cau Giay - Hanoi Station) of 4km. On August 8, 2024, the elevated section was put into commercial operation, while the underground section is currently under urgent construction to ensure progress and early synchronous operation of the entire line.
