Cristiano Ronaldo commented with tearful laughter in a Diario AS video on Instagram that Lionel Messi doesn't deserve his eighth Ballon d'Or.

Today, October 31st, AS posted a video on Instagram in which Editor-in-Chief Tomas Roncero comments on Messi receiving the 2023 Ballon d'Or from France Football magazine. In the video, Roncero, speaking in Spanish, says that Messi went to Inter Miami to retire, but he played as if he had already retired while still at PSG.

"It's true that Messi won the World Cup, but with six penalties," Roncero said. "The World Cup was also 10 months ago. Messi has won eight Ballon d'Or awards, but he only deserves five. Messi holds the Ballon d'Or of Andres Iniesta or Xavi, the player who won six titles in one season Robert Lewandowski, and now the top scorer in every competition Erling Haaland."

Ronaldo liked AS 's video and commented with four "laughing with tears" emojis. Ronaldo's comment received over 16,000 likes and more than 4,000 replies in just six hours, while AS 's video only had 13,000 likes.

This isn't the first time Ronaldo has shown support for posts criticizing Messi on social media. After the Argentine superstar won the 2021 Ballon d'Or, Ronaldo also liked a post criticizing Messi on Instagram , then commented: "Factos," which means "truth" in Portuguese.

Ronaldo is the most followed person on Instagram , with 609 million followers. Messi is second with 490 million followers. The two superstars also own eight of the 10 most liked posts on this social network.

Messi was awarded five penalties at the 2022 World Cup, scoring four goals. He also scored three other goals, helping Argentina win the tournament after defeating France on penalties. In the four previous World Cups, Messi had only been awarded one penalty, but he did not score.

After scoring in every round of the 2022 World Cup and winning the Best Player award, Messi was presented with his eighth Ballon d'Or by France Football magazine on the evening of October 30th in Paris. He surpassed the Silver Ball winner Erling Haaland, even though the Norwegian striker won three titles with Man City, broke the Premier League goalscoring record in a single season, and won the Champions League Golden Boot.

Ronaldo has won five Ballon d'Or awards, most recently six years ago, when he leveled the score at 5-5 with Messi. Since then, Messi has won three more Ballon d'Or awards in odd-numbered years, putting him ahead 8-5. A French magazine called Messi "infinity," with the symbol of a horizontal number 8.

Ronaldo was not nominated for the 2023 Ballon d'Or after a forgettable World Cup with only one goal. He also moved to Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia in January 2023, further reducing his chances of winning another Ballon d'Or. The 38-year-old striker still retains his desire to play and hopes to participate in Euro 2024, and possibly even the 2026 World Cup.
