Ronaldo sets new World Cup record.
In their opening match in Group K of the 2026 World Cup, which took place early this morning (June 18th, Vietnam time), Portugal dominated the game but their attack was ineffective, resulting in a 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo. Joao Neves put the "European Selecao" ahead in the 6th minute. The equalizer for the African side came from Yoane Wissa in the 45+5th minute.
In the early hours of June 24th (Vietnam time), Portugal will face Uzbekistan. Four days later, Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates will conclude the group stage with a match against Colombia.

In the recent match, Ronaldo had a rather lackluster performance, failing to make any successful shots, dribbles, or passes that created clear scoring opportunities for his teammates. Throughout the 90 minutes, CR7 only touched the ball 25 times, made 21 passes (90% accuracy), lost possession 3 times, and won only 2 of his 3 aerial duels.
Despite a lackluster performance, Ronaldo still set a new record by becoming the oldest player (excluding goalkeepers) to start a World Cup match at 41 years and 132 days old. The previous record belonged to Atiba Hutchinson (Canada, 39 years and 292 days old) in the match against Croatia in 2022.
In the history of the World Cup, there are three players older than Ronaldo who have played in matches. Egyptian goalkeeper Essam El Hadary started against Saudi Arabia at the 2018 World Cup at the age of 45 years and 161 days. Second is Colombian goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon (who came on for 5 minutes at the 2014 World Cup) at 43 years and 3 days old. Third is Cameroonian striker Roger Milla (who came on as a substitute at the 1994 World Cup) at 42 years and 39 days old.
This was Ronaldo's 229th match for the Portuguese national team. CR7 has scored a total of 143 goals. This is the sixth World Cup of the career of the striker born in 1985. In 23 matches, he has scored 18 goals.
Ronaldo has gone 10 consecutive matches in major tournaments (World Cup/EURO) without scoring for Portugal, despite taking 33 shots, 11 of which were on target.
Portugal's seven shots on goal against the Democratic Republic of Congo were their fewest shots in a World Cup match since 2022 (which was also seven shots against South Korea).
