Ronaldo once played for Juventus. |
Cristiano Ronaldo has just won another important victory on the legal front in a lawsuit concerning unpaid wages during the Covid-19 pandemic, when he was playing for Juventus.
The dispute originated in 2021, when Ronaldo left Juventus to return to Manchester United. The Portuguese striker claimed he still owed €19.6 million in unpaid wages, while Juventus argued that the player voluntarily waived that amount to help the club overcome the financial crisis caused by the pandemic.
In April 2024, an Italian court ruled in favor of Ronaldo, questioning the legality of financial agreements between Juventus and the player during a period when the club was under investigation for financial mismanagement. At that time, Juventus was ordered to pay 9.8 million euros, equivalent to half of the amount Ronaldo demanded, and they fulfilled this obligation.
Unsatisfied with the verdict, Juventus immediately appealed, aiming to recover the money they had paid. However, in the latest ruling, Judge Gian Luca Robaldo rejected the Turin club's appeal, thus upholding the decision that Juventus must pay Ronaldo's salary.
However, the matter is not entirely closed. According to legal regulations, Juventus still has the right to appeal to a higher court and is considering further steps. This means that the legal battle between the two parties, which has been ongoing since the pandemic, may still have new developments.
The context of the lawsuit reflects the general difficulties faced by European football during the Covid-19 pandemic, when clubs lost revenue from fans and were forced to negotiate salary deferrals with players. Juventus was one of many teams that chose this option, committing to full payment once their financial situation stabilized.
The problem lies in the fact that Ronaldo left the club before his deferred salary payments were settled. Juventus argued that the parting agreement stipulated the termination of all financial obligations. However, the court determined that the documents provided by Juventus lacked Ronaldo's signature and were therefore not legally valid.
This victory helped Ronaldo successfully protect his financial rights, while also closing a chapter in a years-long dispute with his former club. However, with the possibility of appeal still open, this may not be the final conclusion of the case.
