Aleksandr Sorokin broke his own world record, running 100km in 6 hours 5 minutes 35 seconds in his hometown.

Sorokin set a new world record on May 14 at The World's Fastest Run in Vilnius, Lithuania on May 14. The Lithuanian runner's performance was 6 seconds faster than his previous record - 6 hours 5 minutes 41 seconds - when he ran 100km in Bedford, England on April 23, 2022.

"I am very happy to have broken a world record in my hometown," Sorokin said proudly. "Vilnius is where I started running, and I am honored to thank this place by making history right here."

With 6 hours 5 minutes 36 seconds in 100 km, this 41-year-old runner achieved an average pace of 3:39, or 3 minutes 39 seconds per km.

In addition to Sorokin, nearly 30 ultra runners participated in The World's Fastest Run event held near the town of Cyber, in the developing Naujamiestis district of Vilnius.

Laura Tyrell, head of PR for Nord Security, the main sponsor of The World's Fastest Run event, believes Sorokin's amazing achievement will bring more interest to Cybertown and the surrounding area. "This record will always be a symbol that strong will, dedication and a goal-oriented attitude are the paths to success, no matter what career you choose," Tyrell added.

Sorokin, born September 30, 1981, was a kayaker in his youth, but gave up the sport at 25 after a shoulder injury. He worked as a laborer for a while, then smoked, drank and put on weight, before deciding to change his lifestyle and take up running at 31.

“I started running to get back in shape when I hit 100 kilos. I didn’t play any sports, just drank and smoked,” Sorokin once told Running Magazine . “With running, you can do more than you think.”

After finding his new passion, Sorokin quickly progressed, becoming a superstar in the ultramarathon world. In addition to his two fastest 100km records, the runner holds several other world records, including the longest 100-mile (161 km) run of 10 hours, 51 minutes, 39 seconds, and the longest 12-hour run of 177.414 km.

In September 2022, Sorokin won the 2022 IAU 24-Hour European Championships, held in Verona, Italy on September 17-18. He finished after running 319.614 km in 24 hours, an average of 4 minutes and 30 seconds per km. The Lithuanian ultramarathoner thereby broke the world record for distance run in 24 hours - 309.4 km, which he set in 2021.
