Aleksandr Sorokin broke his own world record, running 100km in 6 hours, 5 minutes, and 35 seconds in his hometown.

Sorokin set a new world record on May 14th at The World's Fastest Run in Vilnius, Lithuania. This achievement by the Lithuanian runner was 6 seconds faster than the previous record – 6 hours 5 minutes and 41 seconds – when he ran 100km in Bedford, England on April 23rd, 2022.

"I am very happy to have broken a world record right here in my hometown," Sorokin said proudly. "Vilnius is where I started running, and I am honored to thank this place by making history right here."

With a time of 6 hours, 5 minutes, and 36 seconds for 100 km, this 41-year-old runner achieved an average pace of 3:39, or 3 minutes and 39 seconds per kilometer.

In addition to Sorokin, nearly 30 other ultra athletes participated in The World's Fastest Run, held near the town of Cyber, in the developing Naujamiestis district of Vilnius.

Laura Tyrell, head of PR at Nord Security, the main sponsor of The World's Fastest Run, believes Sorokin's remarkable achievement will draw even more attention to Cyber Town and the surrounding area. Tyrell added, "This record will always be a symbol of how willpower, dedication, and a goal-oriented attitude are the path to success, no matter what career you choose."

Sorokin, born on September 30, 1981, was a kayaker in his youth, but gave up the sport at age 25 after a shoulder injury. He worked as a manual laborer for a while, then smoked, drank, and gained weight, before deciding to change his lifestyle and starting to run at age 31.

"I started running to get back in shape when my weight reached 100 kg. At that time, I wasn't playing any sports, just drinking alcohol and smoking," Sorokin once told Running Magazine . "With running, you can do more than you think."

After discovering his new passion, Sorokin progressed rapidly, gradually becoming a superstar in the ultramarathon world. In addition to his two fastest 100km records, this runner also holds several other world records, including running 100 miles (161 km) in 10 hours, 51 minutes, and 39 seconds, and the longest run of 12 hours covering 177.414 km.

In September 2022, Sorokin won the IAU 24-Hour European Championships, held in Verona, Italy on September 17-18. He finished the race, covering 319.614 km in 24 hours, averaging 4 minutes and 30 seconds per kilometer. The Lithuanian ultramarathon thus broke the world record for distance covered in 24 hours – a record of 309.4 km that he himself set in 2021.
