Rwanda has become the first country in Africa to integrate and effectively deploy drones to combat malaria, which is endemic in most areas of the country.
Drones are now being used to map mosquito breeding sites, allowing for targeted interventions. Once mapped, drones are used to spray insecticides in mosquito breeding areas, along with community mobilization by attaching loudspeakers to drones to broadcast pre-recorded messages on malaria prevention measures.
Drone larviciding had a significant impact in 2020, with the Rwanda Biomedical Centre reporting a 90.6% reduction in malaria cases in Jabana, a suburb of the capital Kigali, from 12,041 to 1,129 after just eight months of drone intervention.
