'Colors' of the Dao Na Ba Village

On the day of the launch of the "Women Preserving the Cultural Identity of the Dao Lo Gang Ethnic Group in Na Ba Hamlet" Club in mid-August 2025, Ms. Trieu Thi Binh, the Club's Chairperson, along with nearly 60 members, dressed in their traditional ethnic costumes, arrived early at the People's Committee Hall of Dan Tien Commune. How could they not be happy? They are the ones who are working hard every day to preserve the cultural identity of their ethnic group, hoping that this cultural heritage will endure through time.

From the cultural model of the point

Na Ba hamlet, Dan Tien commune, is home to 100% of the population of the Lo Gang Dao ethnic group. Traditional cultural values such as hand-embroidered clothing, ancient language and writing, the Coming-of-Age Ceremony, Pao Dung singing, and wedding customs and festivals are still cherished and preserved by the Dao community here.

However, amidst the wave of integration and the strong impact of technology, many beautiful cultural traditions are gradually fading away. Recognizing this, the Women's Union of Dan Tien commune has proactively restored and promoted the model of ethnic cultural clubs.

Before the merger of the three communes of Binh Long, Phuong Giao, and Dan Tien, the locality had an effective Dao Lo Gang cultural preservation club with over 20 members. After the merger, to adapt to the new conditions, the Association continued to promote the establishment of a new club in Na Ba hamlet, with the participation of nearly 60 female members who are directly involved in practicing and teaching traditional culture.

In a conversation with us about preserving the identity of the Dao Lo Gang people, Ms. Pham Thi Nhi, President of the Women's Union of Dan Tien commune, said: Women are a crucial force in preserving ethnic identity. They are the ones who directly sew traditional costumes, teach their children the language and writing system, sing folk songs, and maintain family traditions. Therefore, establishing the "Women's Club for Preserving the Cultural Identity of the Dao Lo Gang Ethnic Group" is our way of concretizing the role, responsibility, and pride of Dao women in today's life.

The club is expected to become a model, not only preserving traditional cultural values but also contributing effectively to the movement "Building the modern Vietnamese woman: confident, self-respecting, loyal, and capable." Through regular activities, members share experiences in sewing traditional costumes, learning the Dao Nôm script, practicing folk songs, and together preserving beautiful customs.

Pausing briefly, Ms. Nhi spoke as if sharing her thoughts: "Having studied in several localities, I realized that preserving cultural identity while rationally exploiting traditional values will help create new livelihoods for local women. Therefore, we hope that through the restoration and promotion of Dao Lo Gang costumes, cuisine , and folk songs, Na Ba village will become a community tourism destination. Then, women will not only preserve their culture but also increase their income and improve their family's lives from the value of their culture."

To spread national identity

To date, information about the club's activities has spread across social media platforms such as Facebook, Zalo, and TikTok, with videos and images showcasing Dao ethnic costumes; providing instructions on embroidering traditional patterns; and sharing stories about the Coming-of-Age Ceremony and wedding customs.

The club's leader, Ms. Trieu Thi Binh, enthusiastically said: "We utilize social media to introduce the culture of the Dao Lo Gang people to everyone. When I see friends from other places admiring our traditional costumes, I feel very proud and more motivated to learn embroidery, learn folk songs, and actively promote and encourage other women to participate. Currently, the club includes women aged 70-80 who are still enthusiastically participating."

Now, the club's activities are not limited to female members but also have an influence on the community. Mr. Trieu Van Sinh, a resident of Na Ba hamlet, said: "We are very happy that the younger generation, especially women, are interested in learning about our ethnic culture. Previously, many people no longer knew how to sing Pao Dung or read Dao Nôm script, but now, thanks to the classes organized by the Women's Association, many girls have learned to embroider traditional costumes, sing folk songs, and confidently perform at festivals."

Beyond simply preserving cultural identity, the "Women Preserving the Cultural Identity of the Dao Lo Gang Ethnic Group" Club also serves as a community forum, helping women support each other in production, raising children, and building happy families. Through club activities, Dao Lo Gang women share experiences in economic development, maintain a civilized lifestyle, and work together to overcome difficulties.

In the current context, preserving cultural identity is not only the responsibility of the community but also a driving force for sustainable development. The establishment of the "Women Preserving the Cultural Identity of the Dao Lo Gang Ethnic Group" club in Na Ba hamlet affirms the pioneering role of women in heritage preservation.

Through these concrete and practical efforts, the Dao Lo Gang women in Dan Tien are contributing to enriching the cultural tapestry of Vietnam day by day.
