Thorough preparation

At Gio Hai beach in Gio Hai commune, restaurant owners are busy renovating their facilities these days to prepare for the upcoming beach tourism season. Mr. Tran Xuan Anh, owner of Gia Nghia restaurant, said that to prepare for this year's beach tourism season, he invested about 50 million VND to replace all the tables and chairs, and other equipment in the restaurant such as wall fans, gas stoves, and freezers; repair the electrical system, freshwater showers, and refresh the restaurant's landscape after a period of use. He also has strict contracts with suppliers of quality seafood to meet the increasingly high demands of tourists.

"Currently, due to unfavorable weather conditions, the number of visitors is still low. However, according to forecasts, the weather will be hot and sunny in the coming days, especially during the 5-day holiday from April 30th to May 1st, so the number of visitors coming to swim and eat will definitely increase," Mr. Anh said.

Meanwhile, at Cua Viet beach in Cua Viet town, with its advantageous natural conditions and transportation infrastructure, it always attracts a large number of tourists for relaxation and dining. Mr. Nguyen Duc Vinh, owner of Ai Van restaurant, said that although it only operates from April to September each year, after deducting expenses, he earns an average of 120-150 million VND per season.

Entering this year's beach tourism season, he invested about 20 million VND to renovate his restaurant, upgrade the kitchen system and shower area, and prepare a supply of fresh seafood to serve tourists. “Last year during the April 30th - May 1st holiday, my restaurant achieved record revenue of over 220 million VND, with a profit of over 40 million VND after deducting expenses. This year, although it's only the beginning of the tourist season, some tourists have already come to Cua Viet beach to enjoy the seafood. With thorough preparation, we expect a successful beach tourism season this year,” Mr. Vinh said.

According to Tran Dinh Cam, Chairman of the People's Committee of Cua Viet town, in recent times, beach tourism services have continued to receive investment to better serve tourists. Currently, the locality has more than 40 restaurants and food stalls specializing in serving tourists who want to swim and eat at Cua Viet 1 beach.

In addition, there are 30 stalls at Cua Viet 2 beach preparing to open. On average, each beach tourism season, these stalls generate revenue of 150-200 million VND. According to Mr. Cam, to attract tourists during the 2025 beach tourism season, the local authorities have instructed beach service businesses to strictly adhere to state regulations and rules.

In particular, environmental sanitation, food safety, public price listing, and strict prohibition of price gouging are crucial. A local rescue and relief force should be organized. Tourism promotion activities for coastal areas in 2025 should be promoted in conjunction with major national holidays to attract tourists.

At the same time, efforts are being made to raise awareness and responsibility among organizations and individuals regarding environmental protection, proper waste collection, and the preservation of tourism infrastructure in the area. "At this point, we can confidently say that Cua Viet beach is ready to welcome tourists," Mr. Cam said.

The beaches will be handed over to local authorities for management.

Formed and developed over 20 years ago, the tourist beaches in Gio Linh district were initially community beaches, mainly run by households who spontaneously set up stalls to serve beachgoers, aiming to increase income and improve the lives of people in Trung Giang, Gio Hai communes and Cua Viet town.

Recently, within the framework of the ADB-funded Phase 2 of the tourism infrastructure development project supporting inclusive growth in the Greater Mekong Subregion, three public beaches – Trung Giang, Gio Hai, and Cua Viet 2 – have received investment in infrastructure, lighting, and observation systems, ensuring they are ready for operation and exploitation of their future beach tourism potential.

According to Vo Dac Hoa, Chairman of the Gio Linh District People's Committee, the beach tourism season is approaching. To facilitate business activities for local residents at the beaches, ensure sustainability, and align with the organizational structure of the political system, Gio Linh District has submitted a request to the Provincial People's Committee to approve the transfer of beach management responsibilities from the Gio Linh District Project Management, Land Development and Industrial Cluster Management Board to Gio Hai and Trung Giang communes and Cua Viet town.

Regarding the management and operation plan for the newly constructed community beaches, according to Mr. Hoa, because some project components are not yet completed, Gio Linh district has only received the handover of the infrastructure and drawn up reports on the items that need to be rectified or repaired before being put into use. At the same time, he proposed prioritizing and creating favorable conditions for local people to rent space for business.

Specifically, for the 43 businesses currently operating at Cua Viet 1 beach, whose assets are primarily self-invested by the households, Gio Linh district has submitted a request to the Provincial People's Committee for approval to conduct a designated auction for these businesses.

Regarding the 30 plots of land at Cua Viet 2 beach, the initial goal of the project was to create livelihoods for people affected by the resettlement project for the expansion of Cua Viet port. Therefore, it is proposed that an internal auction be conducted for households affected by land clearance in Ward 7, Cua Viet town, to address the livelihood needs of the people.

Regarding the 29 restaurants at Gio Hai beach, it is proposed that a designated auction be held for the 18 households currently operating at the beach; for the remaining 11 restaurants, it is proposed that an internal auction be held for the households in Hamlet 6, Gio Hai commune, affected by the T&T tourism service project. Similarly, for the 13 restaurants at Trung Giang beach, it is proposed that an internal auction be held for the 25 households that previously operated at the beach, in order to create long-term livelihoods and stabilize the lives of the people.
