Innovation for the benefit of patients.

Implementing Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW of the Politburo, the medical staff in Quang Ninh have proactively researched, studied, and mastered new techniques, improving professional procedures in line with the practical requirements of medical examination and treatment. These creative efforts are contributing to early detection, timely treatment, reduced costs, and fewer referrals to higher-level hospitals.

Dr. Tran Van Quyet, Deputy Director of Bai Chay Hospital, said: "In the initial phase of implementing the scientific project, the hospital invited experts from Viet Duc Friendship Hospital to directly support and transfer techniques through hands-on training. After the guided surgeries, the hospital's team has gradually been able to perform the steps in the thoracic surgery procedure. It is expected that in the future, the hospital will be able to independently implement this technique, thereby expanding treatment opportunities for children with thoracic deformities right here in Quang Ninh."

The fact that Bai Chay Hospital is gradually applying and mastering the improved Nuss surgery technique at the provincial level has practical significance. Patients have closer and more convenient access to specialized techniques, while medical staff have more opportunities to accumulate experience and refine their professional procedures. Along with treatment, community-based screening activities are also being implemented to detect cases requiring intervention early. From 2025 to the present, the research team has screened over 11,000 primary and secondary school students in the province, identifying 96 cases requiring surgery.

Many studies in the fields of obstetrics and pediatrics are also being implemented by Quang Ninh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, aiming to detect risks early and improve the quality of treatment for mothers and children. For pregnant women, preeclampsia is one of the dangerous obstetric complications that can directly affect the health and lives of both mother and fetus. The disease can develop silently and may only be detected when severe symptoms appear if pregnant women are not monitored and screened early. From 2025 to March 2026, doctors and medical staff at Quang Ninh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital successfully completed a provincial-level science and technology research project titled "Research on the application of preeclampsia screening techniques in the first trimester of pregnancy".

With over 1,300 pregnant women participating in the study, doctors screened and identified 84 pregnant women at high risk of preeclampsia. These cases received counseling, monitoring, and preventive medication as recommended by experts. The results showed that only 9 pregnant women in the high-risk group actually developed preeclampsia. Notably, thanks to early screening and timely prevention, these cases occurred later and were less severe; no infant deaths were recorded, and the rate of infants requiring postnatal treatment was low.

Dr. Truong Huu Cuong, Head of the Prenatal Diagnosis Unit at Quang Ninh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, said: "With the support and technology transfer from Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, the first unit to implement pre-eclampsia screening in Vietnam, the hospital has received training and developed procedures suitable to its actual conditions. Currently, the pre-eclampsia screening procedure in the first trimester of pregnancy has been routinely implemented for pregnant women visiting Quang Ninh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital. Following this project, the hospital hopes to further expand this technique throughout the province so that more people can access early screening services. In particular, the World Health Organization, international obstetrics and gynecology associations, and the Ministry of Health all recommend that pregnant women should be screened for pre-eclampsia as early as the first trimester of pregnancy."

Doctors at Quang Ninh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital are advising pregnant women on screening for preeclampsia in the first trimester of pregnancy.

At the Neonatal Department (Quang Ninh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital), many premature and extremely premature births have been admitted, resuscitated, and treated right at the provincial level. Thanks to mastering advanced techniques and a comprehensively invested system of equipment, many babies born at 26-28 weeks of gestation, weighing only 500-600g, have had the opportunity to be saved and recover. Notably, doctors in the Neonatal Department are conducting research and applying the minimally invasive Surfactant administration technique, also known as LISA, in the treatment of hyaline membrane disease in premature infants. This method helps reduce lung damage, limit complications from mechanical ventilation, shorten treatment time, and reduce hospital costs for patients' families.

Mr. Nguyen Cong Toan (Bai Chay ward), whose child is being treated at Quang Ninh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, said: "My wife gave birth prematurely at 35 weeks. After birth, my child had an infection and received intensive treatment from the doctors for about two weeks. After being discharged and having a follow-up examination, the child's health is stable. The family hopes that the hospital will continue to apply more modern techniques to better treat severe cases."

In 2025, the entire Quang Ninh health sector recognized 668 research projects and 86 grassroots-level initiatives. In 2026, the province's medical staff will continue to implement 8 provincial-level science and technology tasks in the fields of medicine and pharmacy; while also promoting research on grassroots-level projects and initiatives. Scientific research and innovation activities are therefore increasingly closely linked to the practice of medical examination and treatment, becoming an important driving force for improving the quality of healthcare for the people.
