The statue almost made Szoboszlai leave. |
At first, the Hungarian midfielder thought he was attending a small event to celebrate a year of cooperation with Telekom. However, he quickly realized that he had become an elaborate April Fool's joke staged by Hungary's leading telecommunications company.
"As soon as the statue was unveiled, Szoboszlai was stunned," The Sun described. The life -sized statue had a giant shiny chin, distorted cheeks, strangely spiky hair and looked nothing like him.
Not stopping there, the statue is also made from 1,200 broken mobile phones, as part of Telekom's campaign to promote the recycling of electronic waste.
The Hungarian captain's reaction was captured in full in a video posted by Telekom, going from excitement to confusion to panic in a matter of seconds. Despite being somewhat angry, Szoboszlai kept his cool and eventually took a photo next to the work.

After being invited into a private room, he confided to his two friends: "I almost left. I only stayed out of respect for you guys. Doing this without asking first is unheard of."
When Szoboszlai saw souvenirs such as mugs and T-shirts with the statue's distorted face, he couldn't resist. "This doesn't look like me at all," he jokingly exclaimed. "It looks like my butt is upside down."
Not only that, the 24-year-old player was also threatened that a giant version of the statue would be placed right in the middle of a busy intersection, and even floated on the Danube River on Hungary's National Day (August 20).
While the Liverpool star went through a range of emotions, the backstage crew held their stomachs in laughter at this "unique" reaction. Finally, Telekom officially revealed that this was an April Fool's Day prank.
Szoboszlai is currently the biggest star in Hungarian football. He is an important factor in Liverpool's journey to win the 2024/25 Premier League title. He started 23/28 matches, scored 5 goals and had 4 assists.
Jota's only goal helped Liverpool solidify their top spot. In the 57th minute, Diogo Jota scored the only goal to help Liverpool win the Merseyside derby against Everton.
