Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is in a coma and under intensive care in hospital.

According to Mail Sport , Awoniyi has not been able to regain consciousness after an emergency surgery due to a serious abdominal injury, which occurred during the 2-2 draw with Leicester City last weekend. This is a serious injury that can be life-threatening.

Awoniyi collided heavily with the post while attempting to score and despite receiving first aid at the scene, he returned to the game a few minutes before being forced off.

Forest confirmed on May 13 that the 27-year-old forward underwent surgery after doctors determined the extent of the injury. Initial signs suggest the surgery was successful, but Awoniyi’s condition remains under close monitoring.

Not only did Nottingham Forest face serious medical problems, they also had to deal with the controversy that arose after the match. Owner Evangelos Marinakis came down to the pitch and showed signs of displeasure with coach Nuno Espirito Santo. However, in an official statement, Nottingham Forest strongly rejected the criticism, stressing that Marinakis' actions stemmed from "deep concern and emotional responsibility" towards the players. The club insisted that there was no conflict between Marinakis and Nuno, and criticised the medical team for allowing Awoniyi to continue playing after the initial injury.

Forest also urged former players, managers and football influencers not to rush to judgement or spread misinformation on social media without having all the facts. "We call for the same respect for the welfare of our players that they would expect from others," the club said.

To make matters worse, Forest were unable to replace Awoniyi after using all their substitutions, forcing them to play with 10 men in the final minutes, missing out on the chance to take all three points. This loss of points could seriously affect the City Ground club’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.
