Apple's next wearable device could be an AI-powered brooch, rather than familiar products like watches or headphones. According to The Information , the American tech giant is developing an "AI-integrated smart wearable" and could launch it in 2027.
Sources indicate that this device is positioned as a competitor to OpenAI's smart wearable designed by Jony Ive, which is expected to be released this year. If this information proves true, it would be a significant move as Apple seeks to expand its AI hardware portfolio amidst a rapidly accelerating market.
In terms of design, Apple wants the product to be similar in size to the AirTag but thicker. The developing device is described as having a casing combining aluminum and glass, with a range of internal components for interaction and data recording. Specifically, it has two cameras (wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle) for photography, two microphones for audio recording, and a speaker for sound output. Additionally, it has a button located along the edge and a magnetic charger on the back.
However, The Information did not mention how the device would operate within the Apple ecosystem, nor its role if it appeared alongside existing wearable products such as AirPods, Apple Watch, or Apple Vision Pro. Information about Apple's rumored smart glasses was also not mentioned in the report.
The idea of an "AI lapel pin" sounds novel, but it's not entirely unique in the market. Three years ago, Humane launched the Humane AI Pin, a product developed by two former Apple employees. Despite attracting a lot of attention, the device didn't achieve the expected success, and the company that developed it collapsed last year.
However, Apple is generally highly regarded for its ability to refine ideas and optimize the user experience. More importantly, the iPhone manufacturer possesses a sufficiently large software and hardware ecosystem to support a completely new AI wearable device.
The Information notes that the new product is still in its early stages of development and the possibility of Apple canceling it cannot be ruled out. However, sources suggest that the company is prioritizing building its foothold in the AI field, where it is seen as having yet to make a significant impact.
With Siri being oriented towards becoming a chatbot, a new AI wearable device could become a crucial piece in the company's long-term strategy.
