According to Dr. Huynh Tan Vu, a specialist in the Day Treatment Unit at the University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City, durian contains vitamins C, A, B6, folic acid, thiamin, riboflavin, and niacin. Important minerals such as potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium, sodium, zinc, and phosphorus are also found in durian.
Durian also contains beneficial phytonutrients, water, protein, and fiber. Because of its diverse nutritional content, durian offers many health benefits.
However, some people should avoid eating durian.
Durian has many benefits, however, some people should not eat it.
Pregnant women : Durian has a relatively high sugar content and is considered a "heating" food. If pregnant women eat durian, it may cause bloating and indigestion.
People with internal heat : Durian is considered "hot" and causes phlegm, therefore, it is not suitable for people with sore throats, coughs, colds, constipation, or hemorrhoids.
People with diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure : Durian has a very high glycemic index (up to 70%), and blood sugar levels rise rapidly immediately after eating it, so it is a fruit that should be avoided by diabetic patients. People who are obese, have high blood pressure, and high cholesterol should also limit their consumption of durian.
People with kidney disease and heart disease : Durian has a high potassium content, so people with kidney disease and heart disease should limit their consumption. Potassium accumulation in the body when kidney failure occurs is extremely dangerous as it can cause heart arrhythmias, potentially leading to sudden cardiac arrest.
Patients with gynecological tumors, prostate problems, or infections should avoid eating durian. Durian is very rich in cellulose, so elderly people should limit their consumption as it can cause intestinal obstruction and constipation.
Durian is a nutritious fruit loved by many and used as a medicinal remedy in traditional medicine. However, it is important to be aware of the things to avoid and consult a doctor before using durian for medicinal purposes.
Foods that should not be combined with durian
According to Doctor Vu, some foods should not be combined with durian to avoid harming health, such as:
Do not eat durian while drinking alcohol : Eating durian while drinking alcohol generates heat, which is not good for the body. For people with diabetes or high blood pressure, eating durian while drinking alcohol can lead to headaches, rapid heartbeat, and in more serious cases, bleeding and stroke.
Avoid eating durian with certain meats like beef, lamb, and seafood . Durian is a fruit high in sugar, potassium, fat, and has a high glycemic index. Meanwhile, the aforementioned meats are all rich sources of protein and fat, especially saturated fat, which can increase blood cholesterol. Consuming these two foods simultaneously can cause a sudden spike in cholesterol levels.
Avoid eating durian with spicy foods like pepper, chili, ginger, and garlic , as they will diminish the flavor and, combined with the durian's warming properties, cause an uncomfortable burning sensation.
Durian and coffee are incompatible : Drinking coffee at the same time as eating durian can cause digestive disorders. This is because durian contains a large amount of sulfur-containing oil, which, when combined with caffeine in coffee, inhibits the activity of the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase. This results in 70% of antioxidants in cells not being metabolized, thus causing toxicity to the body.
