About five years ago, in line with the policy of diversifying crops, the former Vinh Linh district supported the development of several fruit tree models in the area. Among them, durian trees were introduced for trial cultivation in Vinh Nam commune, now Vinh Hoang commune.
At that time, many people expressed concerns because durian was a commonly grown crop in the Central Highlands and southern provinces. Meanwhile, in Quang Tri, it was still a very new crop, and there was no practical basis to assess its adaptability or economic effectiveness.
As one of the households participating in the model, in 2021, Mr. Ta Long An's family received financial support from the Agriculture Department of Vinh Linh district (formerly) to build a well for production. With this support, he invested in building a model for growing avocado and durian trees.
According to Mr. An, his family's garden is located on fairly fertile basaltic red soil. After researching, he found that the soil conditions had similarities to some fruit-growing areas in the Central Highlands, so he decided to boldly experiment.

Mr. An contacted a seedling production facility in the former Lam Dong province to purchase 20 durian seedlings. After sending the seedlings to Quang Tri, the facility continued to provide remote guidance on planting and caring techniques. “Initially, I mainly followed the instructions from the seedling facility and agricultural officials. This was a new crop, so I learned as I went along. Fortunately, the trees developed quite well,” Mr. An shared. After more than four years of care, in 2025, the first durian trees began to flower; however, because it was the first harvest, the fruit setting rate was not high.
Mr. An said that the trees produce many flowers but only retain a few fruits until harvest. Some trees yield 3-4 fruits, each weighing over 4kg. "The fruit isn't abundant, but the quality is good. The most important thing is that the trees have borne fruit in this area," Mr. An said. Not only Mr. An's family, but several other households in Vinh Hoang have also been experimenting with durian cultivation in recent years. Although the area is not yet large and the number of participating households is small, some orchards have begun to bear fruit. From this experience, many people are starting to pay more attention to the adaptability of durian trees to the local basaltic red soil.
According to Mr. Dao Hai Tuan, an official from Vinh Hoang commune who had the opportunity to visit the Central Highlands to study durian production models, initial results show that the trees have the potential to grow relatively well in the locality. However, Mr. Tuan believes that these are only initial observations and not enough to make definitive assessments. “The climate conditions in Vinh Hoang differ from those in the Central Highlands and the southern provinces. Summer temperatures are usually higher, and humidity is lower. However, in practice, the trees still develop relatively stably,” Mr. Tuan stated.
According to Mr. Tuan, for durian trees, the stages of caring for flowering, pollination, and fruit development are very important. This is also the stage that determines yield and product quality. "If you want to achieve good results, growers must adhere to a fairly strict technical process because durian is not a type of tree that can be grown haphazardly or cared for based on common experience," Mr. Tuan stated.
Ms. Le Thi Thuy Kieu, Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Vinh Hoang commune, said that the locality has not yet conducted a specific survey and assessment of durian trees due to the small area and the fact that most orchards are only just entering the harvesting stage. However, the initial results will serve as a practical basis for the locality to continue researching and monitoring this crop in the future.
According to Ms. Kieu, if there are future programs and projects to support the development of fruit trees, durian could be one of the crops to be researched and considered based on a full assessment of natural conditions, economic efficiency, and market demand.
Starting from a pilot project five years ago, the first durian fruits have appeared in Vinh Hoang. While it's too early to talk about the success or economic effectiveness of this crop, the initial results show that the efforts and bold experiments of the local people have yielded promising results.
