Senegal faces heavy penalties.

The violent behavior on the pitch and the violence in the stands could cost Senegal dearly, with mass suspensions and severe disciplinary measures from the CAF.

Senegal just won the CAN 2025.

Senegal's joy at winning the African Cup of Nations is in danger of being overshadowed by severe penalties. Following serious incidents during the final match against Morocco on the morning of January 19th, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is reportedly planning a comprehensive investigation targeting Senegal's coaching staff, players, and fans.

Images of numerous Senegalese players, under the leadership of coach Pape Thiaw, vehemently protesting the referee's decision and at times threatening to leave the field caused a stir. In the stands, the situation even spiraled out of control, erupting into clashes that resulted in injuries and arrests.

According to current AFCON regulations, Senegal could face fines ranging from 50,000 to 100,000 euros for the undisciplined behavior of team members and fans. More seriously, individuals directly involved in the on-field reactions risk suspensions of 4 to 6 matches.

With the upcoming international schedule, this penalty could be enforced during the World Cup, meaning many key Senegal players would be unable to participate in the biggest tournament on the planet. This scenario is of particular concern to the Senegalese football leadership, even though the national team's World Cup qualification would not be revoked.

However, Senegal may have to pay the price for leaving behind an embarrassing scandal on the field.

CAF is also considering additional measures, including forcing Senegal to play their home matches behind closed doors and banning their fans from traveling to upcoming tournaments. These penalties would not only affect their performance but also deal a severe blow to the image of the African champions.

Conversely, Morocco has not yet faced any specific disciplinary action. However, several off-field incidents are under investigation, including allegations that the ball boys deliberately obstructed the opposing goalkeeper during extra time. CAF stated that all violations of sportsmanship will be considered fairly.

The incident forced FIFA President Gianni Infantino to speak out just hours after the match. He congratulated Senegal and Morocco for an excellent tournament, but at the same time expressed deep disappointment at the "unacceptable" images on the pitch and in the stands.

According to Infantino, threats of leaving the field and acts of violence go against the nature of football and seriously damage the value of the sport.

The message from FIFA is clear: teams must respect the referee's decisions and act responsibly, not only for the immediate result but also to protect the image of African football. For Senegal, the trophy is still there, but the price to pay after the final night could be long-lasting and have significant repercussions, especially with the World Cup just around the corner.

Highlights Senegal 1-0 Morocco: In the early hours of January 19th, Pape Gueye scored the only goal to give Senegal a 1-0 victory over Morocco in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final.
