VietnamWorks has compiled statistics based on the results of surveys conducted among more than 1,000 workers and 500 manufacturing businesses in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi , Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Bac Ninh, Thai Nguyen, Long An, and other locations.

Businesses experience a decline in revenue.

Accordingly, the nine manufacturing sectors surveyed include industrial products, consumer goods/food production, textiles/leather and footwear, building materials production, high technology, agriculture and forestry, automation/automotive, and pharmaceuticals/biotechnology.

The electronics components manufacturing industry has been generally affected by the economic downturn.

Ms. Tran Thi Hoan, Deputy Director of Navigos Search Northern Region, commented: "According to the report, businesses in 9 key manufacturing sectors all reported being affected, clearly demonstrated by the decline in revenue. At least 50% of businesses faced a decrease in revenue in each sector, with the most affected sector reaching 91% of businesses. More than 50% of businesses in each sector experienced a decrease of less than 10% to over 40% of total revenue."

According to Ms. Hoan, when faced with these difficulties, most manufacturing businesses choose to maintain or downsize. For example, 56% of high-tech businesses cut jobs, while 52% of textile and footwear businesses reduced working hours. Many consumer goods/food and construction materials manufacturers have both cut jobs and reduced working hours.

As a result, up to 58% of manufacturing workers experienced a 30-50% reduction in their total wages. Many workers saw their working hours and overtime reduced, and did not receive their usual benefits.

To get hired, you need to improve your skills.

According to the survey, to cope with the difficult situation, 60% of workers chose to cut living expenses, and 37% took on additional work outside of their regular jobs.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Chung, Deputy General Director of Termo Vietnam Co., Ltd., also observed: "It can be seen that the manufacturing market tends to decline along with the general downturn of the economy. In the first 7 months of the year, the electronics, computer, and component manufacturing industry only achieved 30.7 billion USD, a decrease of 3% compared to the same period last year, and the mobile phone and component industry only achieved 27.8 billion USD, a sharp decrease of 18%."

Automotive/automation is also one of the sectors surveyed that experienced a decline in revenue.

According to Mr. Chung, the annual major recruitment drive in the manufacturing sector usually falls in the last six months of the year. However, predicting this year's recruitment situation, Mr. Chung believes that the last months of the year will be even more difficult as the economic situation becomes increasingly harsh.

"To keep their jobs or get hired, workers must choose to improve their skills and expertise to maintain a competitive advantage. This includes management skills, financial management skills, and skills in using technology in production," shared Ms. Tran Thi Hoan.

Furthermore, according to Ms. Hoan, workers, as well as recent graduates or those about to graduate, need to update their knowledge and skills to adapt to automation. They should also learn essential skills such as effective communication, technology and engineering, and time management.
