Apple is planning a major overhaul of Siri later this year, transforming the digital assistant into the company's first AI chatbot. This would allow the iPhone maker to officially join the AI generative race, currently led by OpenAI and Google.
Chatbot features are considered a cornerstone of Apple's AI market strategy. Previously, the Apple Intelligence platform, launched in 2024, failed to make a significant impact, with many features deemed uninnovative or slower to implement than expected.
Promising major changes
According to Bloomberg , the chatbot, codenamed Campos, will be deeply integrated into the operating systems on iPhones, iPads, and Macs, completely replacing the current Siri interface. Users can still activate the service in the familiar way, by saying "Siri" or by pressing and holding the side button on their iPhone and iPad.
The news site reports that Apple is likely to roll out chatbots later this year. The company plans to introduce the technology at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June and officially release it in September.
Campos will support both voice and text input, and is the biggest highlight in Apple's upcoming operating systems. The company is integrating this chatbot into iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, along with macOS 27.
Aside from the chatbot interface, this year's operating systems haven't seen many major changes. Apple has primarily focused on improving performance and fixing bugs. Last year, the company implemented a large-scale design overhaul, unifying the interface and user experience across all operating systems.

Unlike third-party chatbots that run on Apple devices, this planned product is designed to analyze open windows and screen content, then perform appropriate actions and suggest commands. The chatbot can also control device features and settings, including making calls, setting timers, and opening the camera.
More importantly, Siri will be integrated into all of Apple's core applications, including Mail, Music, Podcasts, TV, Xcode programming software, and Photos. This will allow users to perform more tasks using only their voice.
Campos could even help Apple eliminate Spotlight entirely, a feature that allows users to search for content on their device and look up limited information such as sports scores or weather. The chatbot will have an interface designed by Apple, but will rely heavily on a customized AI model developed by the Google Gemini team.
Additionally, Apple is discussing the possibility of placing chatbots directly on Google's servers, using TPUs (Tensor Processing Units). Meanwhile, the short-term Siri update continues to run on Apple's Private Cloud Compute, using high-performance Mac chips.
However, Apple built Campos with the understanding that it could replace the platform model over time, allowing the company to leave the Google ecosystem in the future if it so desires. The company has also tested chatbots with Chinese AI models, preparing for deployment in that market.
Marking a new AI strategy
The shift toward a chatbot approach marks a significant strategic change for Apple. For years, company leaders had downplayed the role of conversational AI tools popularized by OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft.

They argue that users prefer AI directly integrated into features. Some examples lie in ongoing efforts with writing tools, Genmoji (AI-powered emoji creation), and notification summarization, rather than standalone AI-powered conversational experiences.
Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering, said in an interview with Tom's Guide in June that releasing a chatbot was never a goal for the company. He said the company didn't want users getting work done in a conversation.
However, without its own chatbot, Apple risks falling further behind its competitors. Samsung, Google, and many Chinese smartphone manufacturers have already integrated conversational AI extensively into their operating systems.
The pressure on Apple is increasing as OpenAI is gradually becoming a direct competitor. The developer ChatGPT has ambitions to turn its software into an "AI operating system," and is also developing new hardware devices under the leadership of Jony Ive, Apple's legendary former chief design officer.
