According to the HCDC, from the beginning of March until now, the number of respiratory infections recorded in the city has continuously increased, with nearly 140,000 cases, including 34 cases of severe viral pneumonia.
Currently, during the transitional season, the erratic changes in temperature and humidity create favorable conditions for respiratory pathogens to develop and spread, especially seasonal influenza and viral pneumonia; at the same time, the summer travel season increases the risk of transmission from public areas and crowded places.
In order to detect early particularly dangerous respiratory viruses, and to monitor the circulation and mutation of influenza viruses and SARS-CoV2, the HCDC (Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control) requests public and private hospitals in the area to implement surveillance of suspected cases of severe viral pneumonia (SVP) among patients seeking examination and treatment.
Specifically, the health sector will conduct surveillance sampling for SVP cases when patients experience a sudden fever above 38 ° C, shortness of breath (rapid, shallow breathing, labored breathing as observed by a doctor or measured by blood gas analysis), X-ray images showing lesions suggestive of viral pneumonia, or when the treating physician suspects a viral cause.
For suspected cases presenting for examination and treatment at the facility with symptoms such as fever above 38°C, cough, sore throat, respiratory tract inflammation (possibly shortness of breath, chest pain); 14 days prior to the onset of symptoms, close contact with sick or dead poultry or their waste during farming, trading, transportation, slaughtering, processing, consumption of raw blood or undercooked poultry meat; or close contact with suspected, probable, or confirmed cases of avian influenza A (H5N1) during work, daily activities, caregiving, or communication...
The Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control (HCDC) requests that public and private hospitals in the city send investigation forms for severe viral pneumonia cases and test request forms to the HCDC, and then send the patient samples along with the two forms to the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City.
Handling suspected cases and contacts of influenza.
According to the HCDC, suspected cases of avian influenza A (H5N1) must be isolated at a medical facility. Personnel transporting patients must be fully equipped with protective gear, and the transport vehicles must be handled in accordance with the Ministry of Health 's regulations on handling avian influenza A (H5N1) outbreaks.
For those who have been in contact with patients or suspected cases of influenza A (H5N1) , a list should be compiled, and health monitoring instructions should be given for 14 days from the last contact for adults and 21 days for children under 15 years old. Daily temperature checks are required, and immediate notification to the local health station is necessary if the temperature exceeds 38°C or if any suspected symptoms appear.
