Publicly advertised for sale
With the rapid development of information technology, candidates can now easily access and learn about various types of cheating devices with just a few clicks of the mouse.
The sale of devices designed to "assist" in exams is booming as the 2023 National High School Graduation Exam approaches.
Typing the search term "miniature earphones" on e-commerce platforms, websites, and social media groups, users immediately find hundreds of products of diverse origins and shapes, with prices ranging from a few hundred thousand to a few million dong, depending on the type. Some places even offer rental services for as little as 200,000 dong per day.
The devices are cleverly disguised as music players, matchboxes, Nokia 1080 phones, ATM cards, keys... or even buttons, collar pins, or placed inside Casio calculators. The price of each type of earphone varies and usually ranges from 300,000 to 3,000,000 VND (depending on the type). According to many account holders, these earphones are difficult to detect because of their small size, sensitive microphones, loud and clear sound, and ability to be used continuously for many hours.
Along with product information, these account holders often include a video or link to a YouTube channel with dozens of videos providing detailed instructions on how to use the products.
Besides miniature earphones, these account holders also introduced many miniature camera products with the ability to "capture exam questions in ultra-high definition" to maximize the effectiveness of both products. The miniature camera is in the form of a button; it can be attached to a button to record and take pictures of the exam questions and send them outside, while the earphone plays the answers after the questions have been solved.
Discreet buying and selling, cash on delivery (COD) available.
Most contact phone numbers are publicly provided by account holders on social media or in product advertisements, but these account holders can only be contacted via Zalo, and buying and selling activities take place discreetly.
A Facebook shop offers a price list for renting "exam support" equipment.
Posing as a prospective high school exam candidate, a reporter contacted a seller in a Facebook group with thousands of members to inquire about purchasing exam "aid" devices. After contacting the seller via Zalo as requested, the reporter was introduced to a set of ultra-miniature earphones priced between 1.5 and 3 million VND, which are difficult to detect due to their tiny, pea-sized dimensions.
The kit will include: 1 SIM card transmitter (Nokia 105 phone), 1 miniature earpiece, 5 earpiece batteries, and 1 charger. All you need to do is call the number on the Nokia phone, and the signal will be immediately transmitted to the earpiece. "This device requires a SIM card; when you call, it will automatically answer and play the call in your ear. We only sell them, we don't rent them. Payment is made via COD (cash on delivery)," the seller said.
After the reporter expressed a desire to inspect the device in person before making a purchase, the seller refused, asking for understanding, "Because it's currently the national high school graduation exam period, the police don't allow me to sell this item, so I'm hesitant to do a direct transaction." Seeing the customer's disappointment, the seller continued to promise: "Then you'll have to wait until the beginning of July, because it's difficult at this time."
According to our investigation, only businesses under the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of National Defense are permitted to trade in these devices. Furthermore, these businesses must also be certified by the competent authority as meeting security and order requirements.
