STO - Not only hard-working and productive, Khmer people in Long Phu district (Soc Trang) also love sports activities to improve their health, have fun, entertain and participate in tournaments and sports festivals of the district and province. Some sports such as: dragon boat racing, iron petanque, volleyball, conch chess... are practiced regularly by many people, creating a widespread movement.
Deputy Director of the Center for Culture - Sports and Broadcasting of Long Phu district Diep Dang Khoa said: “Every year, the district and communes and towns plan to organize many tournaments and sports festivals to celebrate important events of the country and traditional festivals of the Khmer people, such as: Chol Chnam Thmay traditional New Year and Sene DolTa festival... These activities attract a large number of athletes to compete enthusiastically. In particular, the district's ngo boat teams and iron ball, volleyball and conch chess teams with the core force of Khmer people to participate in ethnic sports tournaments and festivals and the Ooc Om Boc Festival - Ngo boat racing at the provincial and regional levels of the Mekong Delta. Thanks to that, the mass sports movement in the district is maintained and widely developed”.
These days, coming to Kom Pong Mean Chey Tuk Prăy Pagoda, Long Phu Town, Long Phu District, we saw a rather lively training atmosphere. This year, the board of directors and the board of directors of the pagoda's boat club have made careful preparations, organized early training, and mobilized athletes from hamlets in the area and some neighboring localities to practice in preparation for the upcoming race.

As one of the veteran and experienced athletes on the green race track, Mr. Thach Thai Son, who steers the boat team of Kom Pong Mean Chey Tuk Prăy pagoda, shared: “For over 20 years, I have participated in the boat team to practice and compete at the Ooc Om Boc Festival - Boat Race of the province, the Mekong Delta region and the district race. I really like this sport. When the season comes and I cannot participate in the practice, I feel very sad. When I was summoned, I arranged my family affairs to come here to practice with my brothers. The most memorable and joyful thing is that in 2012, the boat team of the pagoda won the provincial championship for the first time.”
According to the coaching staff, in the first days, the number of athletes coming to practice was higher than in previous seasons. Up to this point, the pagoda's ngo boat team has mobilized up to 90 swimmers to participate in practice, with some days reaching 90. Mr. Lam Van Rinh - Head coach of the ngo boat team of Kom Pong Mean Chey Tuk Prăy pagoda said: "To participate in the Ooc Om Boc Festival - Traditional Ngo boat race of Soc Trang province in 2023, the coaching staff and athletes of the pagoda are very excited when the functional agencies pay attention to cheering them on. Every day, the athletes come to practice in large numbers and enthusiastically, with a high spirit of determination. In particular, the pagoda also invested in buying a new pair of fishing rods that are more satisfactory to test when the team officially practices on the boat."
In addition, the petanque movement is also developing strongly in communes and towns in the district. Mr. Thach Thanh Ly - a member of the Phu Duc Hamlet Petanque Club, Long Phu Commune, Long Phu District, who won first prize in the men's singles at the Soc Trang Province Petanque Club Championship in 2022 said: "I really like petanque. Every day I take the opportunity to go to the field to compete with my brothers to improve my health and professional skills. When the district selects, I am ready to compete."
Comrade Diep Dang Khoa added: “In the past time, with the close attention of the District Party Committee and the District People's Committee, the mass sports movement in the district has continuously developed. Participating in the Soc Trang Provincial Club Petanque Championship in 2022, the district petanque team won 2 first prizes, 1 second prize, 3 third prizes; participating in the Provincial Senior Sports Festival in 2023, the results were 4 first prizes, 2 second prizes and 2 third prizes. Looking forward to the upcoming Ooc Om Boc - Provincial Ngo Boat Race Festival, Long Phu district has 3 male Ngo boat teams participating, including the Ngo boat teams of the pagodas: Kom Pong Mean Chey Tuk Pray, Serey Muni Sang Ke and Bang Kro Chap Chăs. Currently, the Ngo boat teams have been actively practicing to bring honor to the pagoda and the locality”.
