How is Sterling doing now?

Raheem Sterling's future at Feyenoord has unexpectedly become uncertain, after making just six appearances since joining the Dutch club in February.

After a long period stuck at Chelsea and an early termination of his contract, Sterling signed a short-term deal with Feyenoord. However, his start was not smooth. Issues related to his work permit forced the club to move their training location to Belgium, before he made his debut in a match against Telstar.

Despite making an impression with an assist in the 2-1 win against Excelsior in March, Sterling has yet to score a goal in six games. More worryingly, Sterling was even left on the bench in the 1-1 draw with NEC Nijmegen on April 12th, raising doubts about his role in the team.

Dutch media were quick to offer harsh criticism. NOS journalist Arno Vermeulen stated that Sterling was "past his prime" and no longer had the speed to keep up with the pace of play at the age of 31. Meanwhile, former player Kenneth Perez argued that the player was no longer suited to coach Robin van Persie's philosophy, even claiming he "couldn't run and couldn't win tackles."

The harshest criticism came from Jeroen Elshoff on the NOS podcast, where he argued that Sterling contributed almost nothing. "At this level, you have to fight, work hard, and adhere to tactical discipline. But Sterling didn't do that," Elshoff emphasized.

Sterling's contract only runs until the end of the season, and a wave of criticism is casting a shadow over his future at Rotterdam. Feyenoord are currently second in the Eredivisie and are preparing to host Groningen at De Kuip on April 25th. This could be Sterling's last chance to salvage the situation.
