At the 2026 Asian Athletics Championships held in China on June 20th and 21st, the Vietnamese athletics team won 2 gold medals, topping the overall medal standings among the 10 participating countries, ahead of China (1 gold, 4 silver, 1 bronze), Thailand (1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze), India (1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze), Kazakhstan (1 gold, 1 bronze)...
Vietnam's two gold medals came from the women's and men's 4x400m relay events. While the victory of the "quartet" of Hoang Thi Minh Hanh, Quach Thi Lan, Nguyen Thi Hang, and Nguyen Thi Ngoc was expected, the gold medal won by the men's team, consisting of Ta Ngoc Tuong, Vu Ngoc Khanh, Tran Dinh Son, and Le Ngoc Phuc, was considered a pleasant surprise.
In the other two events where Vietnam had athletes participating, the women's 4x100m relay and the mixed men's and women's 4x400m relay, the Vietnamese runners finished in fourth and fifth place respectively.
Finishing first overall at a continental tournament is a commendable achievement. However, that doesn't mean Vietnamese athletics can be complacent ahead of the 20th Asian Games, where the competition will be much fiercer. Many Asian athletics powerhouses like Japan , Qatar, and Bahrain did not participate in the recent 2026 Asian Relays, including a country very strong in the women's 4x400m relay – an event in which Vietnamese athletics hopes to win a medal, even gold.
Furthermore, at the 2026 Asian Relay Championships, we still occasionally revealed shortcomings in baton handling technique (notable in the 4x400m mixed relay). There were certain inconsistencies in energy distribution, such as in our "favorite" event, the women's 4x400m relay, where athlete Quách Thị Lan, as has often been seen, appeared to run out of breath in the final few dozen meters.
At the 33rd SEA Games, young athlete Le Thi Tuyet Mai ran in the same position as Quach Thi Lan and performed very well, making a significant contribution to helping Vietnam win the gold medal in the women's 4x400m relay...
The high-quality international competitions mentioned above help Vietnamese athletics "adjust" in a timely manner, approaching the ASIAD with confidence, knowing where they stand to continue striving. Stronger competitors await us there, and only serious preparation can help Vietnamese athletics achieve the challenging goal of winning 1 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze medal.
