When the match against Paraguay ended in a penalty shootout defeat, coach Nagelsmann declared he would remain in his position. However, he ultimately couldn't keep that promise. At noon on Friday (July 3rd, German time), Nagelsmann announced his resignation. The President of the German Football Federation (DFB), Bernd Neuendorf, expressed his gratitude: “The DFB expresses its deep gratitude to Julian Nagelsmann for his contributions since September 2023. He is a highly responsible and exceptionally ambitious man. Furthermore, Julian Nagelsmann is an extremely responsible and sincere person whom we all respect.”

These were truly just polite formalities. Because the day before, Thursday, at the DFB headquarters in Frankfurt, leaders including President Bernd Neuendorf, DFB CEO Andreas Rettig... had questioned Nagelsmann and listened to his explanations. Naturally, they were not convincing. The DFB leadership group frankly demanded Nagelsmann's resignation.
However, statements from the DFB leadership proved to be Nagelsmann's lifeline, as he resigned rather than was sacked, thus receiving 7 million euros in contract compensation.
What made German fans even happier was that the DFB (German Football Association) publicly announced negotiations with Liverpool legend Klopp. The DFB stated: “Klopp has clearly expressed his desire to take over Nagelsmann’s job.” Klopp currently holds the position of Global Football Development Director for the Red Bull Group (owner of major clubs such as RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg). During the 2026 World Cup, Klopp worked as a commentator for the television channel Magenta.
Klopp has long been a popular and well-loved commentator in Germany. His contract with Red Bull includes a release clause allowing him to leave at any time if the DFB (German Football Association) extends an offer. This demonstrates that Klopp has already calculated his chances of becoming the national team's head coach.
