How many times a week should you shower and wash your hair?

Three is the minimum, seven is the maximum for most people.

Showering is one of the most effective ways to reduce skin conditions. Dermatologist Shari Marchbein (New York) says that showering too much strips away the ceramide layer on the skin, causing dryness and itching.

When should you take a shower?

Mona Gohara, clinical associate professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine, advises showering if you notice your body starting to smell, as this could indicate a change in your skin's microbiome, leading to irritation, itching, and discomfort.

Regarding shampooing, Michelle Henry, MD, a clinical lecturer in dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, suggests only shampooing when hair is oily to avoid stripping away its natural oils. Ideally, shampoo every two or three days. If your hair tends to be dry, you can extend this to six or seven days to help reduce breakage.

What is the ideal water temperature for bathing?

The ideal temperature for showering is somewhere between warm and hot. To make sure you're getting it right, turn on the water and check the mirror above the sink: If the water fogs up completely within a minute or two, you need to turn it down a bit to the cooler setting. Water that's too hot or too cold can dry out your skin. Also, water that's too hot or too cold can break down your skin's protective barrier faster than warm water.

You can also use bar soap instead of necessarily using shower gel. Dr. Charles Gerba, a professor of virology at the University of Arizona, stated in his research that bar soap does not contain pathogens or bacteria as many people fear.

In what order should you shower?

First, shampoo and condition your hair. Wet your hair thoroughly and pour a coin-sized amount of shampoo into your palm: a small coin-sized amount for short hair, a large coin-sized amount for medium hair, and the largest coin-sized amount for long hair. Sulfate-free shampoo is best for those with color-treated, dry, curly hair or sensitive scalps as it is less drying. Massage the shampoo into your scalp and rinse thoroughly. For a second shampooing, apply the shampoo along the length of your hair and rinse again. Then, apply an amount of conditioner based on hair length, applying it to the bottom two-thirds of your hair, and rinse thoroughly.

You should shower from neck to feet. It's important to wash all parts of the body, including the armpits, feet, lower legs, and genitals, because bacteria and sweat can accumulate in these areas and cause unpleasant odors and infections, advises Dr. Amy Freeland. You should be gentle when cleaning private areas and only clean the outside.

Shaving: The best time to shave is when your skin is warm and moist.

Wash your face: Doing this after showering helps ensure you've removed any conditioner that might have run down your hair, which can cause breakouts.

Dry yourself off after showering.

If you've washed your hair, twist or blot it dry, then pat your body dry with a microfiber towel. Afterward, apply moisturizer while your skin is still damp, as this is ideal for locking in hydration.
