How to bathe properly?

Báo Tây NinhBáo Tây Ninh27/05/2023

How many times a week should I shower and shampoo?

Three is the minimum, seven is the maximum for most people.

Showering is one of the most effective ways to reduce skin conditions. When you shower too much, you strip your skin of its ceramides, leaving it dry and itchy, says New York dermatologist Shari Marchbein, MD.

When should you take a bath?

Mona Gohara, MD, associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine, recommends showering if you feel your body starting to smell bad, as this can indicate a change in your skin's microbiome, leading to irritation, itching, and discomfort.

As for shampooing, Michelle Henry, MD, clinical instructor of dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, suggests washing your hair only when it’s oily so you don’t strip it of its natural oils. Every two or three days is best. If your hair tends to be dry, you can extend that to six or seven days to help reduce breakage.

What temperature should the water be when bathing?

The ideal temperature for bathing is somewhere between warm and hot. To make sure you're doing it right, turn on the water and check the mirror over the sink: If the water completely fogs up in a minute or two, you need to turn it a little cooler. Water that's too hot or too cold can dry out your skin. Plus, water that's too hot or too cold can break down the skin barrier faster than warm water.

How long should I shower?

The feeling of water on your skin is great, but according to the American Academy of Dermatology, standing in the water for more than 10 minutes can cause skin problems. Of course, that doesn't mean you can't stay in the shower for more than 10 minutes, because relaxing in the water can help reduce stress. Experts say you should pay attention to the skin on your hands and feet, and if they shrink or wrinkle, you should get out of the water.

If you wash and condition your hair, keep this in mind. Hair stylist Helen Reavey says conditioner closes the cuticle and smooths the hair shaft, making it easier to detangle. It works immediately, so leaving it on for too long won't make it work any better.

What is the best way to use soap and shower gel products?

Dermatologists recommend using products that are hypoallergenic and fragrance-free. Also, stay away from antibacterial body washes. These products can cause skin irritation, dryness, and itching, says Robert H. Shmerling, MD, of Harvard Health Publishing.

You can also use bar soap, instead of having to use body wash. Dr. Charles Gerba, professor of virology at the University of Arizona, said in his research that bar soap does not contain germs and bacteria as many fear.

What order should I shower in?

First, shampoo and condition your hair. Wet your hair thoroughly and pour a dime-sized amount of shampoo into your palm: a dime-sized amount for short hair, a quarter-sized amount for medium hair, and a quarter-sized amount for long hair. Sulfate-free shampoos are best for those with color-treated, coarse, curly hair, or sensitive scalps because they are less drying. Massage the shampoo into your scalp and rinse. Do a second shampoo, working the shampoo down the length of your hair and rinsing. Then, apply a dime-sized amount of conditioner to the bottom two-thirds of your hair, then rinse.

Wash from neck to toe. It is important to wash all parts of the body, including the armpits, feet, legs and genital area, as bacteria and sweat can accumulate in these areas and cause unpleasant odors and infections, advises Dr. Amy Freeland. Be gentle when cleaning private areas and only clean the outside.

Shaving: The best time to shave is when your skin is warm and moist.

Washing your face: Doing this after showering ensures you've removed any conditioner that may have run down your hair, which can cause breakouts.

Dry after bathing

If you’ve washed your hair, twist or blot it dry, and pat your body dry with a microfiber towel. Then, apply moisturizer while your skin is still damp, as that’s the perfect time to lock in hydration.
