A laboratory-grown heart created from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) that is now beating was recently showcased for the world for the first time at the EXPO 2025 Osaka, Kansai World Expo.
The "iPS heart" on display, measuring 3.3 cm in diameter, was created from iPS cells that differentiate into cardiomyocytes—the cells that produce heartbeats—and processed into layers of cardiomyocytes. This heart beats on its own in a red culture fluid, although it cannot pump blood like a real heart.
This is the work of Professor Emeritus Yoshiki Sawa of Osaka University, Production Director of Pasona at EXPO 2025.
