In 2024, the Youth Union of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy made its mark with the Green Summer volunteer campaign in the former Nam Dong district and A Luoi district, aiming to focus resources on contributing to the construction of new rural areas.

As the leader of the campaign, young doctor Nguyen Gia Binh, born in 1992, led a large number of youth union members in carrying out meaningful projects and activities, such as: providing free medical examinations, treatment, and medication to the people; training in drowning prevention skills; conducting school health screenings and providing free dental check-ups and treatment for students…

According to the Deputy Secretary of the Youth Union of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, volunteer activities in healthcare are a strength of the unit. The nearly 140 million VND raised has been focused on activities such as nutritional counseling, medical examinations, and treatment. Not only in this campaign, but in reality, the Youth Union of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy always prioritizes charitable activities aimed at helping those in difficult circumstances.

Notably, the "Spring of Love - Nurturing Happiness" program series from 2022 to 2024 stands out. Each year, the program has donated over 100 gifts to child cancer patients receiving treatment on the 5th floor of the Pediatric Center - Hue Central Hospital, and over 100 gifts to other child patients and patients receiving treatment at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital...

The Youth Union of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy also collaborates with the Youth Union of Hue Central Hospital, the Social Work Center, and the Hue City Children's Protection Fund to organize a series of "Children's Day on June 1st" programs for many consecutive years at locations such as: Hue Central Hospital Pediatric Center, Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Vinh Ninh Primary School, Duc Son Pagoda Orphanage, Tuong Lai Special School, Tam Binh Children's Protection Center, etc. On average, nearly 600 gifts are given to children and child patients each year.

“Besides the enthusiasm of the youth union members and young people, mobilizing resources to jointly care for the people is equally important. Not only do we receive support from the school's administration, but we also regularly connect with philanthropists to organize large-scale programs. Most importantly, we need to demonstrate tangible results after each activity to attract and mobilize more funding,” shared Mr. Nguyen Gia Binh.

In addition to excelling in charitable work, the unit is also a "spearhead" in voluntary blood donation. Every year, the Executive Committee of the University's Youth Union regularly guides and directs the Living Blood Bank Club to coordinate with the Central Region Blood Transfusion and Hematology Center to organize humanitarian blood donation programs to raise awareness and improve the attitudes of Youth Union members and students of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy regarding voluntary blood donation. In 2024 alone, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy's Youth Union organized 14 blood donation drives; through which, 1,920 whole blood units and 641 platelet units were donated.

Leveraging strengths

According to Nguyen Gia Binh, the "Youth Innovation" movement is also one of the strengths of himself and the Youth Union of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Youth Union members and young people have proactively implemented the movement of pioneering creative labor and mastering science and technology with many diverse activities, bringing useful value to work and life.

The School Youth Union Executive Committee organizes numerous conferences, scientific seminars, forums, and workshops to guide students on scientific research methods; it also organizes festivals, competitions, and creative idea contests, mobilizing union members and young people to participate in building a "Young Innovators' Space"; and the "Every young person in the school contributes an innovative idea" campaign…

Nguyen Gia Binh himself is a shining example of dedication and scientific research among young medical and pharmaceutical students in Hue. From 2018 to the present, he has made his mark with 16 basic-level research projects and 1 project that has been successfully completed at Hue University.

Many of Mr. Binh's innovative initiatives and ideas have been applied in practice, such as: "Blood pressure variability in patients with metabolic syndrome using 24-hour Holter blood pressure monitoring"; "Proposing new criteria in the diagnosis of ST-elevation myocardial infarction with right bundle branch block"; "Early assessment of left ventricular systolic dysfunction using myocardial tissue marker ultrasound in patients with coronary artery disease"...

“In my opinion, balancing professional work, scientific research, and youth union activities, the most important thing is to create a schedule to manage everything effectively. It’s necessary to set short-term and long-term goals; from there, create a specific plan and timeline for each task to achieve the best results,” shared Mr. Nguyen Gia Binh, revealing his secret.
