TUYEN QUANG: New rice varieties from An Dat Thanh Ha Giang Agricultural Joint Stock Company are yielding a bountiful harvest on the large fields of Quang Binh commune.

Linking together to create large-scale farms.

When the People's Committee of Quang Binh commune, Tuyen Quang province, collaborated with An Dat Thanh Ha Giang Agricultural Joint Stock Company to implement an 8.5-hectare large-scale rice field model for producing Ha Giang upland rice seeds in Tan An village during the spring crop season, many local people still had concerns.

For generations, the people have been accustomed to fragmented production methods, with each person cultivating their own land and keeping their own seeds to meet their family's food needs. Now, with the implementation of land consolidation and the planting of the same crop and seeds for commercial rice production, some of the 76 households with land in the Tan An rice field area initially still disagreed.

Faced with this reality, commune and village officials persistently went to each house to persuade and explain the economic efficiency of concentrated production and the long-term benefits of mechanization. Village meetings lasted longer than usual, and intimate, simple stories were shared right on the edge of the fields, helping people gradually realize that to produce high-quality rice, they needed uniform production, and to increase the value of rice, they needed to change their mindset and farming methods.

The government's persistence and the people's consensus ultimately brought everyone in the same direction. And reality soon answered the initial concerns. This past spring, the rice seed production fields in Ha Giang achieved a yield of 67 quintals/hectare, 6 to 7 quintals higher than previous seasons. The increased income from the first large-scale field production season became the most convincing evidence of the model's effectiveness.

Ms. Hoang Thi Mai from Tan An village shared that since participating in the large-scale rice farming program, her family's rice yield has improved significantly. Not only that, but the villagers have also become more connected by cultivating the same rice variety, caring for it together, and sharing experiences throughout the farming process. Therefore, this year her family continues to support the local initiative.

Bringing mechanization to the fields.

Following initial success in Tan An village, Quang Binh commune, the large-scale rice field model is gradually expanding, developing rice seed production with synchronized mechanization from land preparation and seedling sowing to harvesting. Those households that are still unfamiliar with the process will receive direct guidance and support from technical staff throughout the implementation. At the Tan An village cultural center, a demonstration of the tray seedling production process and transplanting machine by An Dat Thanh Ha Giang Agricultural Joint Stock Company attracted a large crowd of local residents. From early morning, the demonstration area was packed with people. While many participated in the practical exercises, even more came to watch, all sharing curiosity and anticipation for these new production methods.

Amidst the steady hum of machinery, the tray seedling system seamlessly performs all stages from soil mixing and watering to seed sowing. In a short time, thousands of seedling trays are completed with high uniformity. What used to require many workers and considerable time is now done quickly, accurately, and efficiently.

Mr. Hoang Van Vinh, Vice Chairman of the Quang Binh Commune People's Committee, said that mechanization is an inevitable trend in the context of an increasing shortage of rural labor. Many young workers have moved to work in industrial zones, while the local population is mainly elderly. Without changing production methods, agriculture will struggle to maintain its development rate.

Based on that reality, the locality determined that it must boldly introduce science, technology, and machinery into the fields, gradually mechanizing the production process. Along with building large-scale fields, the commune will continue to coordinate with specialized agencies to provide technical support and guidance to people in accessing new technologies so that they can confidently apply them to actual production.

That initiative quickly gained the support of the people. Ms. Hoang Thi Bay, from Tan An village, said that at first, many people were quite unfamiliar with the tray seedling machines and transplanters. However, after witnessing the operation process firsthand, seeing the machines working smoothly, the seedling trays being prepared for their own family's fields, and the operators being people from the village, the villagers gradually overcame their apprehension.

Initial curiosity gave way to belief in the new method, which promised to reduce labor and increase production efficiency in future seasons.

The seeds burst into light.

Accompanying Quang Binh commune on this journey is An Dat Thanh Ha Giang Agricultural Joint Stock Company. Building on the successful restoration of the indigenous Ha Giang Te Nuong rice variety, the company continues to invest in research and development of new rice varieties with higher yields and better quality.

This year's crop season, in addition to the Ha Giang Te Nuong variety, the company is introducing and testing three new rice varieties: HG507, ADT707, and Nep Ngoc ADT.

Among them, HG507 is an upgraded version of the Ha Giang upland rice variety, approved for circulation from the end of 2024. ADT707 is a two-line hybrid rice variety developed entirely domestically by a research company, and is currently undergoing expanded testing in many northern provinces. Meanwhile, Nep Ngoc ADT is a new glutinous rice variety created from the genetic resources of upland and indigenous glutinous rice combined with modern glutinous rice varieties.

The path to building a modern agricultural system in Quang Binh commune cannot be completed overnight. However, based on the achievements in Tan An, the people of Quang Binh are gaining more confidence in this new direction, so that the fields here will not only yield abundant harvests but also open up opportunities for more sustainable local agricultural development in the future.
