The Lunar New Year of the Horse is fast approaching. To ensure a cleaner, more orderly urban environment, and to bring joy and peace of mind to residents welcoming the new year, environmental workers, relevant agencies, and local authorities are quietly beautifying the streets.

Thai Nguyen is stepping up its environmental sanitation efforts.

Enhance waste management

In the days leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year), from early morning until late at night, the environmental sanitation workers of Thai Nguyen Urban Environment and Construction Joint Stock Company are always diligently working.

The amount of household waste has increased many times compared to normal days, especially in densely populated residential areas, traditional markets, and flower and ornamental plant markets. To ensure a clean and airy environment, the units have proactively increased shifts and trips, and deployed 100% of their staff on duty during peak days.

Mr. Hoang Anh Tuan, Director of the Environmental Sanitation Branch of Thai Nguyen Urban Environment and Construction Joint Stock Company, said: "Before and during Tet (Lunar New Year), the amount of waste increases by about 20-30%. We have developed a specific plan, increased resources, and arranged workers to work in shifts, including at night, with the goal of preventing waste accumulation and avoiding the emergence of environmental pollution hotspots during the Tet holidays."

Besides garbage collection, street washing and cleaning of central streets and public areas have also been intensified. According to Mr. Chu Ba Trung, Director of the Agricultural Extension and Environment Center of Thai Nguyen province, the Lunar New Year is a crucial time for environmental sanitation, as the amount of household, construction, and commercial waste increases dramatically.

Therefore, from the outset, the Center advised the province and proactively coordinated with departments, agencies, and localities to strengthen guidance and closely supervise environmental service contractors. Contractors were required to develop specific plans, allocate sufficient personnel and equipment, and absolutely not be complacent or negligent during peak periods.

Along with increasing waste collection and transportation, units must also proactively handle temporary waste collection points, public areas, local markets, central streets, and areas where cultural activities and spring festivals are held.

Not only is Thai Nguyen cleaner, but in the last days of the year it also becomes fresher and more vibrant thanks to the comprehensive urban beautification work being implemented. Trees are neatly trimmed, the lighting system is inspected and repaired; many streets are decorated with lights, banners, and slogans welcoming the Year of the Horse.

A new feature in this year's urban beautification efforts is that Thai Nguyen province is promoting decentralization and delegation of authority to wards and communes, granting them more autonomy in organizing urban beautification, maintaining urban order, and ensuring environmental sanitation.

As a result, localities can flexibly choose methods that suit the specific characteristics of each residential area and street, promptly detecting and addressing emerging issues at the grassroots level.

Road renovation

Simultaneously, ongoing urban infrastructure projects are being expedited to ensure traffic safety and environmental hygiene. Many projects to upgrade sidewalks and roads, and address flooding, are being urgently completed before the Tet holiday.

Mr. Tran Van Dong, Deputy Director of the Thai Nguyen Construction and Transportation Management Center, said: "We require contractors to focus maximum manpower and machinery to complete the items according to the plan, while ensuring safety and not affecting the daily lives and travel of people during Tet."

At the grassroots level, wards and communes simultaneously launched campaigns to restore urban order. Cases of encroachment on sidewalks and roads, illegal awnings, canopies, and advertising signs were dismantled. Hotspots for street vendors, construction material stockpiles, and waste disposal were focused on and addressed, especially in areas around hospitals, markets, schools, and busy streets.

As the southern gateway to Thai Nguyen province, with a high volume of traffic and people, Trung Thanh ward has been identified as a key area for urban beautification efforts during the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Horse.

In the days leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year), the ward authorities focused intensely on beautifying the main roads, residential areas, and areas bordering major traffic arteries, aiming to create a civilized and tidy impression right at the "gateway" to Thai Nguyen.

Sidewalks and roads are regularly cleaned; trees are trimmed uniformly; and accumulated waste and construction materials are collected and cleared promptly. Efforts to restore urban order are carried out regularly, combining public awareness campaigns and enforcement of regulations, focusing on encroachment on sidewalks and roads, and the placement of illegal advertising signs that detract from urban aesthetics.

Mr. Hoang Ngoc Huan, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Trung Thanh Ward, said: The ward recognizes that urban beautification not only serves the daily lives of local residents but also contributes to building the overall image of the province in the eyes of tourists. Therefore, the ward has proactively developed a detailed plan, clearly assigning responsibilities to each department and each residential group, ensuring that urban beautification is implemented synchronously and effectively.
