Ho Chi Minh City – A 39-year-old pregnant woman, in her third pregnancy, suddenly experienced severe abdominal pain followed by cardiac arrest and respiratory failure. Doctors at Tu Du Hospital successfully saved both mother and child.

The woman, residing in Binh Duong , had previously given birth naturally to a 12-year-old and an 8-year-old child. Two years ago, she underwent surgery to remove uterine fibroids and had a contraceptive implant inserted. However, she experienced prolonged and heavy menstrual bleeding, so the implant was removed.

When she was 25 weeks pregnant, the doctor discovered placenta previa, the most severe form, where the placental villi penetrate the uterine peritoneum and can invade neighboring organs.

On the morning of June 23rd, nearly 34 weeks pregnant, she suddenly experienced severe abdominal pain to the point of being unable to breathe. On the way to Tu Du Hospital for emergency treatment, she fainted. Upon arrival at the emergency department, she was in a coma, with cardiac and respiratory arrest, unmeasurable pulse and blood pressure, and a distended abdomen making it difficult to determine the fetus.

The doctor determined that the patient had a ruptured uterus, hemorrhagic shock, and was in critical condition, activating the red alert procedure to mobilize medical staff for support. The patient received intensive resuscitation, external chest compressions, adrenaline injection, intubation, intravenous access, and emergency cesarean section.

The premature baby boy was unresponsive, cyanotic, and was intubated, given manual ventilation, and transferred to the neonatal ward for mechanical ventilation. The mother underwent a hysterectomy, received over 3.3 liters of blood and blood products, and her heart started beating again.

Typically, patients in this condition experience coma, cardiac arrest, massive blood loss, irreversible brain damage, multiple organ failure, coagulation disorders, lung damage, and infection. Fortunately, this patient made a "spectacular and unexpected recovery," according to the doctors. Three days after the life-or-death surgery, she was able to walk on her own, and ultrasounds and blood tests showed her health was stable.
