The steadfast daughter
The Ba Hon National Historical and Scenic Site comprises Hon Dat, Hon Me, and Hon Queo. From the center of Rach Gia ward, follow National Highway 80 for about 30km, then turn left for 10km to reach the site, a place closely associated with the name of the female Hero of the People's Armed Forces, Phan Thi Rang. She was portrayed movingly by writer Anh Duc in his famous literary work "Hon Dat" under the name "Sister Su".

According to Pham Thu Thuy, Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Hon Dat Commune, Hero of the People's Armed Forces Phan Thi Rang (alias Tu Phung) was born and raised in a family with a rich revolutionary tradition. Following in her family's footsteps, she joined the revolution at the age of 13. In 1960, the organization assigned her to Tho Son Commune, Hon Dat District, Kien Giang Province (now Hon Dat Commune, An Giang Province) to build a base, mobilize the masses to participate in the fight against the enemy, and fight.
On the night of January 8th and the early morning of January 9th, 1962, while traveling from Hon Me to Hon Dat, she was ambushed and captured by the enemy. They used many brutal methods and tortured her, but she maintained the integrity of a revolutionary soldier, remaining steadfast in her ideals until the very last moment. Her image has become a symbol of revolutionary heroism.
The tomb of Phan Thi Rang, located at the foot of Hon Cave, is well-maintained and regularly cleaned and cared for by the local people. Behind the tomb are steps leading up to Hon Cave and a bas-relief commemorating the victory. This was once a place for treating wounded soldiers, storing documents, and organizing training. On either side are long plaques leaning against the mountain, inscribed with the names of nearly 1,000 martyrs who bravely sacrificed their lives during the years of struggle for national independence and freedom at Hon Cave. Due to its special role in the two resistance wars, the Ba Hon Historical and Scenic Area was classified as a national historical site by the Ministry of Culture and Information (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) in 1989.
Traditional revolutionary sites
Currently, the historical site is being planned and restored with many items such as the monument and tomb of Phan Thi Rang, a traditional exhibition house, victory reliefs, a military medical cave, a memorial temple for the heroes and martyrs of Hon Dat… Each structure vividly recreates the historical picture full of bloodshed but indomitable spirit of the heroic sons and daughters who fell to their deaths for the survival of the Fatherland.
Every year, from January 4th to 9th, the Party Committee, government, and people of Hon Dat solemnly organize a festival commemorating the sacrifice of Heroine Phan Thi Rang of the People's Armed Forces to express their admiration and gratitude to this female hero of their homeland. At the same time, it recalls the tenacious revolutionary struggle of the army and people of Hon Dat, educates the younger generation about patriotism and national pride, and contributes to enriching the historical and cultural values associated with the Ba Hon National Historical and Scenic Site. Mr. Nguyen Trung Kien, Deputy Director in charge of the Hon Dat Commune Cultural, Sports and Broadcasting Center, said: “Every year, the festival attracts about 10,000 people from inside and outside the province to participate, offer incense, and express their deep gratitude to the female hero Phan Thi Rang in particular and all the heroes and martyrs who sacrificed for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland in general.”
On this occasion, many schools inside and outside the province organized activities to revisit historical sites, following in the footsteps of Phan Thi Rang, helping students better understand the patriotic tradition. “Through activities at the Ba Hon National Historical and Scenic Site, students not only heard stories about the life and heroic sacrifice of the female hero and martyr Phan Thi Rang, but also received visual education about the revolutionary traditions of their homeland. This is a vivid way of educating them to further appreciate history and strive for excellence in their studies,” said Mr. Ha Thanh Son, Deputy Principal of Muong Kinh Primary School, Son Kien commune.
Visiting and offering incense in remembrance of Heroine of the People's Armed Forces Phan Thi Rang for the first time, Nguyen Dinh Thien Huu, a student in class 5/1 of Muong Kinh Primary School, expressed: “I am very moved and proud. Through the stories I have heard, I understand more about the heroic sacrifices of the heroes and martyrs. I tell myself that I will try my best to study and train well to be worthy of the revolutionary traditions of my homeland.”
