At least one person died in the incident. |
According to confirmation from the Peruvian Ministry of Health , 47 people were injured, with 3 in critical condition, and one person died. The tragedy occurred when hundreds of fans gathered outside the stadium for a traditional cheering event before the derby match between Alianza Lima and Universitario on April 5th, creating unprecedented chaos.
Initially, many sources reported that a section of the stadium wall had collapsed, trapping many people. Firefighters were quickly mobilized, with approximately 40 personnel participating in the rescue effort. However, both the Alianza Lima club and the authorities later denied the information, asserting that no structural elements of the stadium had been damaged.
Authorities believe the cause may be related to overcrowding and congestion in the crowd, leading to a stampede and panic. However, an investigation is still underway to clarify the full sequence of events. Alianza Lima has also pledged full cooperation with authorities and transparency of information.
Despite the serious incident, the league organizers said the derby would still go ahead as planned. They also emphasized that they would be strengthening safety measures for fans inside and outside the stadium.
