A glorious journey
With over 20 years dedicated to teaching, Mr. Nguyen Van Quyet - Head of the Foreign Language Department at Thoai Ngoc Hau Specialized High School, Long Xuyen Ward - has made his mark with many outstanding achievements, but for him, the greatest happiness is seeing his students grow and become more confident every day.
The unique characteristic of specialized schools is that they require teachers to constantly innovate their methods to ensure both the quality of general education and the quality of specialized education . To achieve this, Mr. Quyet organizes foreign language teaching with the motto "Learning must go hand in hand with practice and experience." He focuses on building a dynamic, integrated learning environment and combining it with soft skills training instead of just focusing on textbook grammar. He also organizes public speaking and debate competitions to create a platform for students to practice presentation skills and critical thinking. To create an environment for students to practice communication regularly, Mr. Quyet established and maintains an English Speaking Club. He also organizes learning activities linked to community service, supporting the school's scholarship fund to help students showcase their talents, sense social responsibility, and support disadvantaged students…
Nurturing gifted students is a glorious and proud task, but it also presents many challenges, requiring teachers to invest deeply and have a long-term strategy. Teacher Quyet shared: “To effectively nurture gifted students, I expanded my professional network, organized high-quality mock exams to give students opportunities to gain practical experience, familiarize themselves with the pressure and types of exam questions, and exchange and learn from the experiences of gifted student teams from other provinces across the country. At the same time, I developed in-depth materials to support the training.”
Over the past five years, many students mentored by Mr. Quyet have achieved high rankings in competitions, notably 2 second prizes, 6 third prizes, and 13 consolation prizes in the national-level excellent student selection exam; 1 first prize in an English public speaking competition on the topic of climate change and representing Vietnamese children to speak at a conference on disaster prevention and climate change before ministers from Southeast Asian countries, China, Japan, and South Korea; 1 first prize and 1 second prize in the English public speaking competition (Speak to Lead) organized by the US Embassy, and many other awards.
Deep affection for students
Ms. Vo Hong Phuong, Vice Principal of Ngo Si Lien High School in Vinh Thong Ward, has just been awarded the Third-Class Labor Medal for her outstanding achievements in her work, contributing to the cause of building socialism and defending the Fatherland.
For over 20 years, Ms. Phuong has dedicated herself to teaching, traveling back and forth across the Giai Phong 9 ferry countless times to impart knowledge to students in disadvantaged areas. Unmarried, she devotes most of her time to school and her students. She is constantly worried about students dropping out due to difficult circumstances, and about students who are unruly and easily led astray.
Ms. Phuong shared: “I try to teach my students with all my love and responsibility. I gather information from many sources to closely monitor, correct, and advise them to be well-behaved and improve every day. I always show love, sincerity, and tolerance so that they can rely on me, trust me, and share with me. At the same time, I direct the school's Youth Union to organize appropriate and healthy activities and playgrounds to attract their participation.”
Over the past 7 years, Ms. Phuong has raised nearly 700 million VND to support disadvantaged students in purchasing health insurance; awarding scholarships; buying notebooks, books, and clothes; helping 3 students in difficult circumstances who suffered accidents and serious illnesses with over 105 million VND; and raising funds to build a charitable house for a poor but academically excellent student, costing 70 million VND...
In her management role, Ms. Phuong focuses on motivating teachers and staff to strive for excellence. Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan, a geography teacher at Ngo Si Lien High School, shared: “Ms. Phuong is always dedicated to her profession, enthusiastic with her colleagues, and caring towards her students. As the vice principal in charge of professional development, Ms. Phuong provides thorough guidance and readily supports teachers.”
When asked about their greatest wish, both Mr. Quyet and Ms. Phuong hoped that their students would become kind people, create positive value, and live useful lives for their families and society.
