The silent "mothers" who care for newborns.

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - As a place that receives and treats pediatric patients under 90 days old, the Neonatal Department of Thanh Hoa Pediatric Hospital plays a crucial role in the early life journey of babies who need special care. Understanding this, the team of doctors, nurses, and medical staff are always dedicated, responsible, and caring, treating pediatric patients as if they were their own family members.

The silent

Dr. Hoang Thi Duc, Head of the Neonatal Department, checks on the patient's health.

With 17 years dedicated to the medical field, deeply imbued with President Ho Chi Minh's teaching: "A good doctor is like a loving mother," Dr. Hoang Thi Duc, Head of the Neonatal Department, always upholds a high sense of responsibility and dedication to her profession. In our conversation, Dr. Duc shared that in 2008, after graduating as a general practitioner from Hanoi Medical University, she began working at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Thanh Hoa Children's Hospital, which was later split into two departments: the NICU and the Neonatal Department. She was assigned to work in the Neonatal Department from its inception.

Throughout her career, Dr. Duc has always treated pediatric patients like family members, showering them with love and special care. As head of the department, over the years, Dr. Hoang Thi Duc has consistently set a shining example by practicing what she preaches and working closely with colleagues to find the most effective treatment methods, helping pediatric patients reduce their hospital stay and mortality rates.

Dr. Hoang Thi Duc, a specialist in Internal Medicine, shared that she has many memorable experiences that motivate her to love and dedicate herself to her profession. It was in 2009, when she was first entrusted by the department's leadership with the primary responsibility of treating and caring for a patient with severe neonatal infection. With her quick thinking and expertise, she and her team diligently sought effective treatment options, and she boldly proposed the appropriate antibiotic. The patient's infection improved, and they were discharged after two weeks of treatment.

“Besides strong professional expertise, treating and caring for children requires meticulous attention to detail, ensuring sterile conditions and thorough testing, because otherwise, it's easy to miss certain illnesses. In addition, doctors, nurses, and medical staff must have love and empathy for patients as if they were their own family, understanding the mother's psychology to encourage and support her in providing the best possible care for pediatric patients,” added Dr. Hoang Thi Duc.

Also a veteran in the department, nurse Le Thi Dieu Thuy has 11 years of experience and is always praised by colleagues and patients' families for her dedication to serving patients. Ms. Thuy shared: “I always put myself in the mindset of a second mother to the patients, wholeheartedly caring for them as if they were my own children, striving to maintain their lives and support successful treatment. I also frequently spend time with the mothers to encourage and comfort them, helping them overcome difficulties so they can provide the best possible treatment and care for their children.”

It is this love and compassion that, over the years, has enabled her to act as a "bridge," connecting those in difficult circumstances with benefactors, supporting them with meals and a portion of their daily living expenses. A recent example is Hang Thi Sung, a Mong ethnic woman from Muong Lat commune, who was hospitalized with a high fever and refusing to breastfeed after giving birth five days prior. Ms. Thuy, along with her colleagues, stayed by her side, providing the best possible care and support. Understanding the hardships faced by the patient's family, she connected with the individual to help them cover their expenses during her hospital stay.

Doctor Duc and nurse Thuy are two of the many shining examples in the Neonatal Department. With 7 doctors and 18 nurses, the Neonatal Department treats and cares for an average of 50-60 patients per day. In addition to providing emergency treatment for all infants under 90 days old, the department also participates in the treatment and care of critically ill patients, such as those with conditions affecting premature and full-term infants like pneumonia, jaundice, infectious diseases, surgical conditions, and post-operative care.

To provide better care and treatment, over the years, the team of doctors, nurses, and medical staff in the department have continuously improved their professional skills, regularly updating their knowledge, treatment protocols, and applying new techniques. This has led to proposals and improvements in treatment methods, procedures, and professional techniques to enhance the quality of patient care. Simultaneously, the department has received investment from the hospital in equipment such as electric syringe pumps, infusion pumps, jaundice treatment lamps, etc., thus continuously improving the quality of patient care.

Caring for and treating newborns is an extremely demanding job, requiring medical professionals to possess specialized knowledge, skills, meticulousness, and patience to ensure the child's development and safety. They not only monitor the child and develop effective treatment plans but also act as devoted mothers, caring for them during their first steps in life. Thanks to the silent sacrifices, tireless efforts, and warm hearts of the doctors, nurses, and medical staff here, many "little angels" recover, regain their health, and return to the loving embrace of their families.
