At dawn on May 16, the State Bank announced that the central exchange rate of the Vietnamese dong to the US dollar increased by 5 dong, reaching 12 dong.
Meanwhile, in the US market, the US Dollar Index (DXY) which measures the volatility of the greenback with 6 major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF) fell 0,26% to 102,42.

The dollar fell from a five-week high in the last session, as investors awaited news from the Washington government on resolving the debt ceiling issue.

The greenback plunged early after data showed the New York Federal Reserve's Empire State Manufacturing Index fell from 10,8 in April to -4 this month. This is the biggest drop since April 31,8 and the lowest since it fell to a three-year low in January of -4.
The Empire State Manufacturing Index measures the relative level of business in the state of New York. A level greater than 0,0 indicates that the situation is getting better, while a number lower than 0,0 indicates that the situation is getting worse.
“The market is in a waiting mode for clearer signals from the Washington administration on the issue of default in the US,” said Amo Sahota, director at Klarity FX in San Francisco.
President Joe Biden is scheduled to meet congressional leaders on Thursday, May 16, before he leaves for the Group of Seven meeting in Japan. Earlier, US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy warned that there was still no move towards a deal to remove the $5 trillion debt ceiling in negotiations with the White House.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, the euro gained 0,2% against the greenback, currently at $1,087. Against the Japanese yen, the dollar gained 0,3%, currently at 136,06.
