According to AFP, speaking at a United Nations Security Council meeting in New York on May 23, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres declared that the world is failing to protect civilians as the number of people caught up in conflicts and humanitarian crises surged last year.
According to United Nations statistics, in 2022 alone, the number of civilian deaths recorded in 12 conflicts reached nearly 17,000, a 53% increase compared to the previous year, with the highest numbers in Sudan, Ukraine, Ethiopia, and Syria. According to Mr. Guterres, 94% of gunfire victims in attacks on densely populated areas are civilians, while more than 117 million people face severe hunger and food insecurity as a consequence of conflict and war. Globally, the number of refugees forced to leave their homes has reached 100 million.
