According to the Telegraph , green cards will be introduced in some European competitions next season, possibly including England's FA Cup, alongside the yellow and red cards already familiar to football fans.
A green card is given to players who commit a foul to prevent a dangerous attack from the opposing team or who behave inappropriately towards the referee. Unlike a red card, if a player receives a green card, they must leave the field for 10 minutes before returning to continue playing.
Green cards will soon be available.
The same applies to accumulating green cards in a match. A player will be sent off and not allowed to return if they receive two green cards, or one yellow card and one green card.
The appearance of the green card sparked controversy on social media. Many fans questioned the distinction between red and green cards because for many years, a foul that prevented a clear scoring opportunity for an opponent was equivalent to a direct red card. The player committing this foul only received a yellow card if the foul occurred inside the penalty area, but this also resulted in a penalty kick.
"If the green card is implemented, Atletico Madrid will only be playing with six players in each match," commented Mesut Ozil, former Arsenal, Real Madrid, and Germany national team midfielder.
Previously, fans witnessed referees issuing white cards in the Portuguese women's league. Unlike yellow, red, and blue cards, a white card is a gesture to honor actions demonstrating fair play during a match.
