BHG - Having just returned from Hanoi to her beloved Ha Giang , despite her busy schedule, journalist Doan Huong Giang still took the time to meet with us to share her challenging yet proud journey in journalism. According to her: In 2009, I was a newly graduated television college student leaving my rural hometown in the lowlands to go to the mountainous region, starting my probationary period at the News Department of the former Ha Giang Provincial Radio and Television Station, now the Ha Giang Newspaper. At that time, the person who directly guided and mentored me in my first steps in the profession was an older brother, who now holds a leadership position in the department. The knowledge I accumulated from university wasn't always applied directly to my work, but my observation, continuous learning, and efforts to find my own way of doing things helped me gradually make my mark. Her first visual journalism works such as "The Village Midwife" and "The Village Poverty Eradicator" were commented by colleagues as "unique and creative" in both the way they exploited the topic and the way they expressed it, not only impressing with the title, but also with the depth of content, rich in emotion and humanity.

2014 marked a major turning point for the station, when the provincial television channel began broadcasting via the Vinasat satellite, increasing program time to 18 hours per day. The Special Programs Department was established, separating from the News Department. Journalist Huong Giang was one of the first nine people to move to the new department. Unlike news, which is quick and concise, the special programs are a deeper area, more thought-provoking, and also more challenging. A program lasting 5 to 45 minutes cannot be created from just a few interviews or available materials. This meant that she and her colleagues had to travel further, stay longer in the field, and delve deeper into reality, "eating, living, and working alongside" the people. Thanks to this, information and data became abundant, rich, and even unique.
Journalist Huong Giang expressed: “I know many people and have their names and contact information remembered. Some trips have become unforgettable milestones. For example, during my assignment in Dong Van, thanks to my close relationships with officials and local people, I was introduced to a new way of summarizing Party resolutions on a single A4 page, highlighting only the short, easy-to-remember, and easy-to-implement points. This was the method proposed by the Political Commissar of the Lung Cu Border Guard Post to help ethnic minority people understand and follow the Party's policies. Simple yet effective, the work "One-Page Resolution" was born, widely received and disseminated, and won the Encouragement Award at the 9th Golden Hammer and Sickle Award in 2024.”

In September 2021, journalist Huong Giang was entrusted by the Party Committee, the Editorial Board of Ha Giang Newspaper, the department's leadership, and her colleagues with the position of Deputy Head of the Specialized Topics Department, and then Head of the Arts and Entertainment Department. In her leadership role, she simultaneously participated in reporting, served as an editor, and acted as an exemplary leader in building a strong team. Despite the increased responsibilities, she still dedicated time to listening, sharing, and encouraging each individual to develop a proactive and innovative work ethic. This contributed to improving professional quality and fostering strong cohesion within the department.
Comrade Ngo Duy Quang, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Ha Giang Newspaper, commented: “Journalist Doan Huong Giang is a passionate professional, possessing a burning enthusiasm, dedication, and a spirit of exploration and creativity in her journalistic work. She consistently helps her colleagues and maintains the trust of the people. With exemplary conduct, humility, and amiability befitting a true journalist, she doesn't think only of herself, but wholeheartedly dedicates herself to the development of the agency. Journalist Huong Giang is also the first among the younger generation of journalists at Ha Giang Newspaper to be honored as a national outstanding journalist. Her example is a source of shared pride for the journalistic community in this border region as we embark on our journey of integration.”
Moreover, over 16 years in the profession, she has received numerous prestigious awards and commendations from the provincial to the central level, including: a commendation from the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department for outstanding achievements in the emulation movement commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Vietnamese Revolutionary Press Day; the Encouragement Award at the Golden Hammer and Sickle Award and the Dien Hong Award in 2024; one of her works reaching the final round of the National Journalism Award in 2025, along with many A and B awards at the provincial level.
Journalist Huong Giang shared emotionally: “Meeting the leaders of the Party and State on this special occasion, the 100th anniversary of Vietnam's Revolutionary Press Day, is a great honor. Hearing the encouragement and expectations of the leaders for the team of journalists makes me even more aware of the responsibility and significance of the work I am pursuing. In the historical context of the country and my homeland, everything will change. Overcoming my initial anxieties, I told myself that I must ‘upgrade’ myself to meet the new demands of the tasks now.”
