The model was piloted in Vinh Lam commune, Vinh Linh district, on a scale of 29 hectares. Initial assessments show that applying the alternating wet and dry irrigation process resulted in better rice plant growth and development, healthier plants, and fewer pests and diseases compared to the control plot.
Simultaneously, it aims to raise awareness among all levels of government and farmers to implement solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in rice production, opening up new avenues and increasing farmers' income through the creation of carbon credits in rice production.
The project "Alternating Wet and Dry Irrigation in Rice Cultivation Adapting to Climate Change" is expected to be implemented over 10 years, from 2024 to 2034. A pilot program will be conducted from January 2025 to December 2025. It will be implemented in provinces and cities in the North Central region, Northern Vietnam, and some provinces in the South Central and Southern regions.
This will promote sustainable rice farming, enhance the economic value associated with branded, low-emission rice, and thereby increase income for rice farmers.
