Adapt to all changes

After the exam season counseling program concluded in Dong Nai and Ho Chi Minh City last weekend, many students lingered in the halls, hoping to continue their discussions with staff and admissions experts from universities and colleges.

This scene has been a recurring theme throughout the 28 years of Thanh Nien Newspaper's Exam Season Counseling program. While the topic of exams and career choices remains the same, each year, with societal changes, technological and economic advancements, and fluctuating trends, the issues students are concerned about differ.

The 2026 Exam Season Counseling Program takes place in a very special context: the first year after the merger of provincial-level administrative units, and also the year when important amendments to education laws officially come into effect. 2026 is also predicted to be the time when the social impact of artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more apparent. Not only will AI boost productivity, but it will also change the structure of the labor market, especially for young knowledge workers… These factors strongly influence the future career choices of graduating high school students.

Due to the merger of provinces and cities, the Exam Season Counseling program can reach a wider range of students at a single location. This year, the program was held in Dong Nai , but many teachers and students traveled hundreds of kilometers from the former Binh Phuoc province to participate. Many students were delighted and amazed to be exposed to dozens of different educational institutions simultaneously, with an abundance of information. They were able to exchange ideas and receive advice from teachers, and hear accurate information, not the mixed truth and falsehood found online… From this, they had complete data and a better understanding of themselves before choosing a school and a major.

Young people are quick to grasp trends but easily lose their way. With the explosion of technology, they worry about losing job opportunities. With the changes and adjustments made by universities and colleges in their admissions processes to comply with regulations and the current situation, they are confused about whether their chances of admission will decrease. By seriously participating in the Exam Season Counseling program, listening carefully and selectively, students will know what to do and how to prepare to adapt to all changes.

Therefore, in his speech to students participating in the opening of the 2026 Exam Season Counseling Program held at Dong Nai University on the morning of January 24th, Professor Nguyen Tien Thao, Director of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Training, affirmed: "If there are changes or adjustments, they are necessary to make things better, more humane, fairer, and to clearly differentiate for students; so that candidates can correctly identify themselves, study the right major, or a major that closely matches their abilities and strengths." From there, the Head of Department wanted to convey to students the importance of change: "Change doesn't start tomorrow, it starts now, changing even things that seem impossible. And it's very possible that the first thing we do is change our habits, from our attitude towards studying, preparing for an exam, seriously researching a university's major instead of aimlessly searching for vague information on social media forums; changing the way we study day and night for exams; changing exhausting study sessions that don't guarantee achieving the desired score; changing the habit of rote learning to learning through reasoning…".

Life is constantly moving and changing. The mission and training models of universities also need to be adjusted as AI can almost replace basic tasks. Therefore, this year's exam season counseling program by Thanh Nien Newspaper carries a very clear message: Education cannot simply provide students with pure knowledge; it needs to teach them the skills and resilience to adapt to all changes.
