Pork prices remain stable during Tet (Lunar New Year).

VTV.vn - When Tet (Lunar New Year) is mentioned, the food market, especially pork, is of great interest to consumers.

While food consumption demand is high, the live pig market is moving in the opposite direction. Live pig prices nationwide have reversed course and fallen just days after peaking at 81,000 VND/kg. Currently, prices fluctuate around 73,000 - 75,000 VND/kg, and supply has become abundant again.

Operating within a value chain and integrated livestock farming model, Hai Thinh Nutrition Joint Stock Company in Bac Ninh province has proactively managed all stages, from feed production and breeding to livestock farming and food processing. The total number of pigs raised for meat is consistently maintained at around 70,000. Anticipating increased demand this year, the company has also proactively increased its pork supply by approximately 20% compared to last year.

"We had 50,000 pigs deployed in the North, Central, and South regions. One month before Tet, we sold 50% of the pigs at an average price of 75,000 - 80,000 VND/kg at that time. However, in the days leading up to Tet, we still have the remaining 50%, and we expect the price to be 73,000 - 75,000 VND," shared Mr. Le Van Hung, Deputy Director of Hai Thinh Nutrition Joint Stock Company, Bac Ninh province.

Pork prices have fallen in recent days, and the abundant supply has eased the difficulties faced by businesses at wholesale and local markets. Stalls now have more meat, and some small traders have resumed business. Consumers also have more choices.

Ms. Cao Thi Sinh from Hoang Mai Ward, Hanoi, said: "For the past two days, vendors have had a wide variety of goods for us to buy and use during the Tet holiday. There's more stock, a wider selection, and it's easier to buy. The prices are also reasonable."

"For the past few days, we've had a more pleasant shopping experience, and prices seem to have stabilized. A week ago, we could only get 3-4 chickens a day, but now we can get 5-6. We hope prices will remain stable so that we can get our supplies more easily, and buyers can also find it easier to purchase," said Nguyen Van Hung, a small trader at the Southern wholesale market in Hanoi.

Mr. Nguyen Van Trong, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Association of Farms and Agricultural Enterprises, commented: "The price is trending downwards, so livestock farmers are afraid of further drops and are selling to the open market, thus increasing supply at all wholesale markets. For example, at Ngoc Lu market, the supply has increased to nearly 3,000 pigs per day instead of 1,700."

According to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, the total pig herd nationwide increased by 2.7% by the end of January this year compared to the same period last year, reaching over 31 million head. Livestock production is assessed to be basically sufficient to meet domestic consumption needs before, during, and after the Lunar New Year.
