Through practical research, she realized that growing jackfruit was highly profitable and suitable for the local soil conditions. In 2022, she was granted another loan of 100 million VND to rent land and buy seedlings. “Initially, my husband and I faced many difficulties due to our lack of experience. Thanks to the Women's Union of the commune, which facilitated our participation in training courses on cultivation techniques, I gained knowledge about plant care, pest and disease control, and effective farming practices,” Ms. Ut said.
According to Ms. Ut, although jackfruit trees are easy to grow, they require regular care, fertilization, and monitoring for fruit-boring insects, especially fungal diseases. Additionally, after each harvest, some branches and leaves must be pruned to allow the tree to receive enough sunlight, resulting in larger and sweeter fruit.
Currently, on her 0.3-hectare plot of land, she has planted 200 red-fleshed jackfruit trees and 180 early-ripening Thai jackfruit trees. After 18 months, the jackfruit orchard began to bear fruit. After deducting all expenses, she earned a profit of over 20 million VND in the first harvest. Currently, the orchard is yielding its second harvest, selling at prices ranging from 5,000-19,000 VND/kg for red-fleshed jackfruit and from 2,000-10,000 VND/kg for early-ripening Thai jackfruit. It is known that she has recently planted an additional 45 early-ripening Thai jackfruit trees to increase production in the near future.
Besides tending their jackfruit orchard, Ms. Ut and her husband still work as construction laborers to supplement their income. With an average income of about 10 million VND per month, she can cover her living expenses and take care of her children's education.
Thanks to preferential loans and gradual savings, her family was able to buy land, build a solid house, and equip themselves with machinery and tools for production. By the end of 2024, her family officially escaped poverty, marking the persistent efforts of the couple along with timely support from the local authorities.
According to Nguyen Thi Chon, Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Nhon Hoa Lap commune: "Ms. Le Thi Ut is one of the members who has a spirit of striving for success, knowing how to apply technology to production and legitimately enriching herself. Her case is an inspiration for many local women to strive in life."
